Brian's Brigade - Supporting St. Theresa in Arlington Diocese 2020 WorkCamp
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the loss of Brian Hughes on Monday, Feb. 3rd. Beloved husband, father and friend. Brian was adamant that this event carry on. It has been rescheduled to the Snow Date of Saturday, Feb. 22nd. Please join us in making this a wonderful event in his honor!
Think you make the best chili and want to prove it? Here is your opportunity!
On February 22, 2020, "Brian's Brigade" will be hosting its 2nd Annual Chili Cookoff to raise money to support St. Theresa's participation in the Arlington Diocese 2020 WorkCamp. Workcamp is a week long, unplugged experience for the high school teens of our Diocese where they serve their fellow Virginians by making their homes warmer, safer and drier. It is an intense conversion experience through service, community, and prayer.
1. What exactly IS Brian's Brigade?
Brian's Brigade is an army of people that have come together to support Brian Hughes. Brian and his family are parishoners at St. Theresa and Brian has two children who attended St. Theresa School. Brian was diagnosed with appendiceal cancer almost 5 years ago and painstakingly endured almost 100 rounds of chemo. Although Brian entered hospice care in August of 2019, we continue to trust in God's plan for our good!
Because so many people have asked how they can help Brian in this battle, he has asked us to put together an army of support, "Brian's Brigade." Brian's Brigade hosts events throughout the year to help raise money for various causes within the parish that are near to our hearts. This year, all proceeds from the Chili Cookoff will support St. Theresa's participation in the 2020 Arlington Diocese Workcamp.
The entire St. Theresa community has done so much for our family and continues to be our well of support that never runs dry.
Because it takes an army...
...WE are Brian's Brigade.
2. Do I have to make chili to attend?
No! Just buy tickets! Go the St. Theresa parish webpage https://www.eservicepayments.com/cgi-bin/Vanco_ver3.vps?appver3=Fi1giPL8kwX_Oe1AO50jRrDP6DwBepuGp-JJyQcJfwbHO3iVYxvvxhHjRfLOeq662EvVVAEjqawDomKT1pbouZF0s23LkhxKNiQO57YS93c= and purchase discounted tickets online. Cost is $10 per ticket/$40 per family for advance sales or $15 per ticket/$50 per family at the door. This entrance fee allows you to taste all of the chilis and to vote for your favorite. With each individual ticket comes one voting chip; family tickets come with 4 voting chips. Additional chips will be available for purchase at $3 each or 2 for $5. You hold the power! (Please bring cash)
3. What if I want to bring a chili?
Sign up below! It will cost $50 to enter your chili in the contest, payable on the parish website (use link above). This also covers the entrance fee for you and your family! This contestant fee includes only 1 voting chip since we are trying to keep this as unbiased as possible. But since this is a fundraiser, you are welcome to buy as many additional chips as desired either on the website in advance or at the event.
**Please do not include the name of your chili on the signup genius so that we can keep this as anonymous as possible.**
After you signup and pay online, you will be contacted by the organizer, Viki Hughes, with all the logistical details.
4. How will the chilis be judged?
Everyone votes! As mentioned above, each person will get a voting chip with an individual ticket purchase and family tickets will get 4 chips. Just place your chip in the box next to your favorite chili. The chili with the most chips wins! Easy peasy! Fabulous prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners! And if you simply can't pick just one chili as your favorite, you can purchase additional chips and vote as many times as your wallet will allow.
5. I have won waaay too many other chili cookoffs and would like to give someone else a chance to win. Can I bring something other than chili?
Yes, please! We definitely will need other food and are counting on it! Please bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share. See the signup genius below for some suggestions for tex-mex items. Or feel free to add any other foods you love that aren't listed.
6. My kids are coming and they won't eat chili. Will there be other food?
Yes! There will be hotdogs, chips, snacks, soda and bottled water for sale not to mention all the sides people will bring. We will also have water coolers available. And we will pray for your kids that they will someday embrace the deliciousness of chili.
7. Will adult beverages be available?
Beer and wine will be available for purchase. Score!
8.. How else can I help?
We also need help with check-in, kid's and snack table, raffle table, chili servers, setup and cleanup. Please consider signing up below!
