17: NSCI Refugee Resettlement Project
One of the most important roles of Co-Sponsors is to check in with the refugee family each week for their first 6 months in the country — an opportunity for the family to practice English over text message, WhatsApp or Zoom, receive fun packages of treats or activities for the family to enjoy on their own or with volunteer families (online or outside in warm weather), ask questions they may have about life in Chicago and much more!
Rabbi Daniels or Jenny Quinn ([email protected]) will help to coordinate the time of these check-ins each week, which may need to change based on the family's schedule or other commitments that arise. WE APPRECIATE YOUR FLEXIBILITY!
Visit RefugeeOne's Volunteer Resources - COVID 19 webpage for helpful tips and ideas!
You will receive an email from Jenny Quinn ([email protected]) 1 week before your signup date, and Jenny will ask that you send her notes afterwards. Jenny maintains a Google spreadsheet documenting each "visit" -- a requirement of our relationship with RefugeeOne.
If you are planning to meet with the family in person or speak with them on the phone, RefugeeOne requires that you first consent to a background check. After signing up using this form, you will receive an email from RefugeeOne or the company they employ to complete (online) background checks.
