City of North Liberty
The North Liberty Great Courses lecture series is adapted from a popular Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center program. In this installment, we will learn the science behind the aging brain. Is “aging” a disease, or merely a natural occurrence that produces disease-like symptoms? If humans are biologically programmed to survive and thrive, why do we age at all? Is it possible (or even desirable) to “cure” aging altogether? During the hour and a half course, you will view two videos out of this series of lectures and then the audience will engage in discourse about what was learned.
You do not need to attend every class! You can just select the discussion topics that interest you. The September 10th class sets the foundation for the remaining classes, but - if you happen to miss out - we will catch you up.
1. "The Aging Mind: What Changes?"
2. "Why Don't We Live Forever?"
3. "Aging and Brain Structure"
4. "Aging and Brain Function"
5. "Strategies for an Aging Memory"
6. "Dementia & Alzheimer's Disease"
7. "Aging Well: Staying Active"
8. "Aging Well: Diet & Stress"
This course is made possible by a joint effort between the City of North Liberty and the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center, with extra thanks to the North Liberty Community Library for use of their space.
This series will be facilitated by LivWell Senior Living Specialist Marcie Durian and North Liberty Special Projects Coordinator Angela McConville.
There is no cost to attend. Coffee and treats will be provided. We prefer participants to pre-register through this SignUpGenius so we can accommodate everyone, but drop-ins are also welcome. Attendees must be over 18 years old.
Location, accommodation requests, training, and sign-up questions can be directed to Angela at [email protected] or 319-626-5722.
