People who enroll in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) will learn a five-step action plan to help loved ones, colleagues, neighbors, and others cope with mental health or substance use problems. Similar to traditional First Aid & CPR, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the crisis resolves. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an evidence-based public education and prevention tool – it improves the public’s knowledge of mental health and substance use problems and connects people with care for their mental health or substance use problems.
Course is made possible by Mental Health/Disability Services of the East Central Region (MH/DS of the ECR) and Abbe Center.
Trainer team is Abbe Center for Community Mental Health Associate Executive Director of Recovery Services Theresa Graham-Mineart and Associate Executive Director of Outpatient Services Kathy Koehn.
Theresa Graham-Mineart is a licensed mental health counselor and certified alcohol and drug counselor with more than two decades of experience. As the Associate Executive Director of Recovery Services at Abbe Center she supports the development and implementation of specialty services designed to meet the needs of individuals and families impacted by complex mental health needs.
Kathy Koehn is a licensed master’s social worker and former psychiatric nurse with more than thirty years of experience. As the Associate Executive Director of Outpatient Services at Abbe Center she provides oversight to prescribing and therapy professionals in a nine county catchment area of Eastern Iowa.
There is no cost to take this course; however, you must commit to attend both afternoons and complete the full eight hours to receive credit for the training.
Lunch will not be provided. You may bring your own snacks and beverage.
