Students New to Nose Work
What is Nose / Scent Work?
K9 Nose Work mimics the task of working Detection Dogs—such as drug dogs or explosives dogs—to find a specific scent and communicate to the handler that the scent has been found. Nose Work (also referred to as Scent Work) is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs the opportunity to use their strongest natural sense in a way that is fun, engaging, and that builds and strengthens a foundation of trust between the handler and the dog. In Nose Work dogs are searching for the odor of an essential oil and searches take place in a variety of environments. Searches may be in Containers, Interior, Exterior, Vehicles, or Buried hides as in AKC trials. There are multiple difficulty levels, and factors such as the size of the search area, the number of hides, whether the number of hides is known or unknown to the handler, and the maximum height of hides will change with difficulty level. All dogs that are at least six months of age are eligible to compete in NACSW, AKC Scent Work, etc. Children 13 years of age and older are invited to also complete. Because it's a fast class, we prefer children stay home with a grown up or babysitter. If you must have your younger child on occassion, please remember the child must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Because searches take place in a variety of everyday environments, any area where dogs are allowed can be used as a search area (an office, atrium, or parking lot, for example), and traditional show rings can be used for the Container searches. It's preferred that your doggy stays in your car when it's not their turn. We run one dog at a time, rotating the dogs to get plenty of "runs" in during your time in class. Extreme weather we do have a place inside away from freezing/hot weather situations. Most people use a crate with a vented blanket over it, with a toy, a chew and fresh water. Remember the main rule! PEE-SEARCH-PEE ...and drink plenty of water for human and canine.
