National UMC will collect bicycles for Bikes for the World and diapers, wipes, pads and tampons for the Greater DC Diaper Bank (contactless and with physical distancing measures in place) from cars driving into the Metropolitan parking lot with donations. Community Service Hours available to high school students.
Thank you for considering volunteering for the For Babies and Bikes Drive. Please consider your own health profile and personal risk factors carefully (and consult the information available on the Center for Disease Control website: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/large-events/considerations-for-events-gatherings.html . The safety of all of our volunteers, donors, and our wider community is of paramount importance. We all miss being together as a congregation and visiting with one another, but we must keep the number of volunteers manageable and maintain social distancing at the For Babies and Bikes Drive. In that regard, please note:
--Masks and social distancing are required at all times at the event.
--At the Drive, all on-site volunteers must complete the document attached below containing covid-19 health screening questions, an acknowledgement of covid-19 risks and a waiver of NUMC liability. Please review the document in advance and do NOT attend the event if any of your answers reflect a risk of exposure to covid-19.
--All volunteers must sign up through SignUp Genius and confirm the volunteer’s email address at the event for contact tracing purposes.
--No additional volunteers are permitted. Please do not bring any other family members or friends as volunteers if they have not registered in advance through SignUp Genius.
--Please work only the shift(s) for which you sign up. When your shift(s) is over, please depart promptly. Again, this is so we can keep the number of volunteers manageable and maintain social distancing.
Who: NUMC is partnering with a terrific organization—Bikes for the World—which collects bicycles and accessories here locally and then makes affordable, good quality used bicycles available in developing countries to provide better transport for work, education, and health care.
What to Donate: Bicycles (adult or children’s; serviceable or nearly complete bikes; missing seat or pedal or a flat tire, for example, is fine); Helmets; spare parts and components; and bicycle accessories.
NO tricycles or Razor scooters please. Click here for a complete list of items Bikes for the World accepts:
Who: NUMC is partnering with another great group--Greater DC Diaper Bank--which works to provide a reliable supply of free diapers to families in need living in the DC area. Though it may seem a small thing, by making available a consistent supply of clean diapers, DC Diaper Bank improves the life of a family in a very tangible way. Diapers are provided to social service organizations that are already helping families in need through comprehensive programs and services. Diapers act as a “gateway” to introduce hard to reach families to social services and other vital resources.
What to Donate: A list of items to donate, such as diapers, wipes, pads, and tampons, to the Diaper Drive is available here: https://greaterdcdiaperbank.org/what-we-accept/ Purchase any of the items listed and bring them to our For Babies and Bikes Drive on Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to Noon. Volunteers will remove donations from your car and transport to the diaper bank.
Can’t make it to the drive? Purchase items for the DC Diaper Bank and the items will ship directly to their warehouse. The wish list is here.
Thank you for your careful consideration of volunteering and/or donating to the For Babies and Bikes Drive. And thank you in advance for your understanding of these protocols as we strive to work safely and carefully to help those who may need a hand in these challenging times.
