Loaves and Fishes Dinner - WEDNESDAY, April 22, 2020. 3:30-6 p.m.
Show-me Dharma is sponsoring a meal on the fourth Wednesday of every other month to serve from 100 to 130 homeless or near-homeless people at "Loaves and Fishes," Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church, 702 Wilkes Boulevard, Columbia MO, 65201, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. (although until further notice meals should be dropped off at 3:30 pm).
Our theme for April is Burritos! Feel free to make your favorite burritos. It can be vegetarian or non-vegetarian. If you would like to purchase meat through Patchwork farms, they may give a special discount if you say it is for Loaves & Fishes. They have given good discounts for Loaves & Fishes in the past, and in this way we also support Missouri farmers. (Please know, however, that they only sell pork). During this time, we are requesting that the burritos be individually wrapped in foil (either 1 large burrito or 2 smaller ones), and be placed with side items in individual bags. Besides burritos, we request other items in each bag such as a piece of fruit, some kind of vegetable and a dessert. Feel free to check back towards the end of the second week in April and take two slots if the slots have not been filled.
We will not need volunteers to help serve and clean up this month, unless you really want to stay and hellp the the 2nd and 3rd year medical students that are helping with that. Please drop off the food at 3:30 pm at the rear entrance.
We want to thank the many volunteers from our sangha who have participated in this project since January of 2018! The guests are VERY appreciative of the quality and the variety of the food we have brought. Things have gone very smoothly and the dinners seem to have been a good experience for all. If anyone plays an instrument and would like to provide dinner music, that is also an option!
If you have any questions please call Patricia Riely at (573) 999-6635 or email her(email [email protected]) or email Caya Tanski ([email protected]). If you have to cancel your participation for any reason, contact Caya Tanski, [email protected] so I can take your name off the Sign up Genius webpage).
At least 25 volunteers are needed to prepare various items for the meal, serve and assist with cleaning up afterwards. There are a variety of ways that you can be involved.
This project will help us give back to the community that supports us, honor our commitment to be of service to those in need, and help us nurture and care for people in the larger community as we build closer relationships with others in our own sangha.
Loaves and Fishes was started in the mid-1980s by the St. Francis Catholic Worker community and serves a free community meal seven nights a week from 5 to 6 p.m. in the basement at Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church. Besides Wilkes Blvd. church, more than 20 other local faith communities and other organizations help keep Loaves and Fishes going.
