Loaves and Fishes Dinner - WEDNESDAY, November 27th, 2019
Show-me Dharma is sponsoring a meal on the fourth Wednesday of every other month to serve from 100 to 130 homeless or near-homeless people at "Loaves and Fishes," Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church, 702 Wilkes Boulevard, Columbia MO, 65201, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Our theme for November is "Gratitude." Local Ham from Patchwork Farms (proceeds of which will go to the Missouri Rural Crisis Center) will be prepared by Pat. Please sign up for any of the accompanying dishes such as mashed potatoes, salad, vegatables, side vegetables such as green beans, peas, broccoli, etc. or any other accompaniment or dessert and join us! Feel free to take two slots if you wish.
Vegetables can be of any variety and can be both hot and cold. Salads and any sort of dessert are acceptable. We have taken off breads since bread is donated by Panera. However, if you have a special bread that you'd like to bring that could go with desserts, feel free to bring it.
We ask that volunteers who want to help serve and clean up arrive by 4:15, and those dropping off food to do so no later than 4:30 pm at the rear entrance. We also encourage you to help with cleanup. With many people staying to help clean up, we are able to have everything finished, ideally by 6:45 pm.
We want to thank the many volunteers from our sangha who have participated in this project since January of 2018! The guests are VERY appreciative of the quality and the variety of the food we have brought. Things have gone very smoothly and the dinners seem to have been a good experience for all. If anyone plays an instrument and would like to provide dinner music, that is also an option!
If you have any questions please call Patricia Riely at (573) 999-6635 or email her(email [email protected]) . If you have to cancel your participation for any reason, contact Caya Tanski, [email protected] so I can take your name off the Sign up Genius webpage).
At least 25 volunteers are needed to prepare various items for the meal, serve and assist with cleaning up afterwards. There are a variety of ways that you can be involved.
This project will help us give back to the community that supports us, honor our commitment to be of service to those in need, and help us nurture and care for people in the larger community as we build closer relationships with others in our own sangha.
Loaves and Fishes was started in the mid-1980s by the St. Francis Catholic Worker community and serves a free community meal seven nights a week from 5 to 6 p.m. in the basement at Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church. Besides Wilkes Blvd. church, more than 20 other local faith communities and other organizations help keep Loaves and Fishes going.
When you sign up below, you will receive a confirmation email. Please save the email because it will contain a link allowing you to cancel or change your signup if you need to.
After you sign up, your name will be displayed on the signup sheet. The other information you provide goes only to church personnel.
