Somers Garden Bed Caretakers
Thank you so much for offering to help with the vegetable garden beds throughout the summer months! The sign up will consist of a week of garden care from Sunday to Saturday This is such an exciting project and Somers Elementary School is so grateful for your involvement and time!
In the garden beds this season—this is what’s planted:
Northeast bed: Tomatoes—small cherry type tomatoes
Southeast bed: Pumpkin Patch…maybe some squash sneaking up from last year
Northwest bed: Tomatoes—small cherry type tomatoes
Southwest bed: Sweet globe peppers, beans, lettuce, spinach, peas
HERE ARE SOME BASIC INSTRUCTIONS:
*WATERING—depending on the weather—if it rains or not, you may have to water as little as 3 times or every day during your assigned week or time. Please use your best judgment—you can’t go wrong!
*There is a hose on the south side of the building near the service entrance/4K doors/door #11. The hose needs to be attached to the watering wand, which is kept behind the hose rack. There is a water “key” to turn the water on. It is hidden in the white ceramic pot by the 4K doors/door #11. The water key gets put on the silver hook up by the hose and turns it all the way to the left, until you hear the water. When done watering, PLEASE MAKE SURE THE WATER IS TURNED ALL THE WAY OFF AND THE WATER KEY IS RETURNED TO THE PROPER PLACE. Unhook the watering wand and store it behind the hose rack. Please make sure to hide the water key back under the sculpture.
****PLEASE ALSO TAKE CARE WITH THE WATERING WAND AND HOSE—WE HAVE NEEDED TO REPLACE A FEW SINCE THEY WERE LEFT ON THE GROUND AND NOT PUT AWAY PROPERLY—THANKS!!****
*WEEDING—IMPORTANT!! Please check the garden beds for any weeds and pull. Most of the weeds look like grass along the edges of the beds—but other ones sneak in there also.
*HARVESTING—please feel free to harvest any produce that looks ready and enjoy with your family and/or friends! We don’t want any produce to go to waste after everyone’s hard work. It might be a good idea to bring a basket or bags with you to carry any produce.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Please have fun and enjoy the gardening time with your family or group!
