Every year the Herkimer Diamond Mine and KOA Campground hold a Geology Camporee. It is one of our favorite events because it is very well organized so the boys learn a lot about geology and earn the Geology Merit Badge. The badge is taught by college professors and high school teachers who really know thier stuff. We will leave early in the morning of Saturday October 19, arrive at the Diamond Mine by 9:00am to participate in the lessons. In the afternoon we will set up camp at the KOA Campground so that we can cook dinner and spend the night in our tents. On Sunday morning we will pack up and drive home. There will also be some time on Saturday afternoon to hunt for diamonds in the open mine. A Scout who already has the merit badge and does not want to participate in the program again can spend the day in the mine looking for diamonds. The cost for Scouts who participate in the merit badge program and work in the mine will be $49.00 (includes program fee, camping fee, food and travel). For Scouts just working in the mine the fee will be $20.00. Each Scout must bring his own lunch for Saturday, sleeping bag with mat, mess kit and water bottle. Scouts working in the mine must wear goggles which he can bring from home or purchase there for $2.50. Stone hammers will be provided for Scouts who do the program. Please sign up if you would like to attend. Not only can you earn the merit badge but you can also get a night of camping and do some patrol cooking, both of which are needed for advancement.
