Each year the Troop schedules a trip to a historically significant site during the April break from school. We have been to Valley Forge, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington DC.
This year we would like to return to Gettysburg since we have not been there since 2014. We will leave on the morning of Wednesday April 24th and return on Sunday April 28th. We will spend one day touring the village, one day in the museum and visitors center then two days touring the battle field and the Eisenhower Farm. We will be hiking the 10 mile Billy Yank Trail and the 4 mile Johnny Reb Trail. Our tour guide will be Stacey Kilts, whose son Robert is an Eagle Scout from Troop 45. We will be staying in tents at a private campground where we will have access to bathrooms and showers. We will do most of our own cooking in the campsite but one night we will have dinner at General Picket's Buffet. We should also have time to play some mini golf in Gettysburg and to visit the US Army Heritage and Education Ctr. on the way home.
The cost will be about $130-$140 per person depending on how many people go. This includes travel, and camping, food, tours and mini golf while in Gettysburg. Scouts should bring extra money for souvenir shopping and for food at rest stops while on the road. The consent forms are due by April 10.
As with all of our trips parents are encouraged to join us. In fact we do not allow first year scouts who have never been away on a long trip with us to go unless a parent comes along. According to new BSA Youth Protection requirements, all adults including parents who are with the Scouts for 72 hours or more must be registered as leaders and have completed the Youth Protection training (just like at camp).
