Silver Spring Stage is committed to diversity in casting and is open to actors of all ethnicities, ages, and genders. Silver Spring Stage is an all-volunteer community theatre; all roles are open and unpaid.
The lines between fact and fiction blur with hilarious and moving results in David Henry Hwang’s unreliable memoir. Asian-American playwright DHH, fresh off his Tony Award win, leads a protest against “yellowface” casting in the original Broadway production of Miss Saigon. At the same time, DHH mistakenly casts a Caucasian actor, Marcus G. Dahlman, in the lead Asian role of his own Broadway-bound play Face Magic. Meanwhile, DHH’s father, HYH, finds himself ensnared in a political scandal rooted in anti-Chinese paranoia. As these stories intertwine, DHH is forced to confront the complex and changing role that “face” plays in American life today.
CASTING AND CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Yellow Face is a fast-paced script in which a small cast of diverse actors portrays dozens of characters. We are looking for actors to fill the following tracks, some of which require performers of a specified race/ethnicity due to the subject matter of the play:
THE ANNOUNCER and NAME WITHHELD ON ADVICE OF COUNSEL: Caucasian
MARCUS G. DAHLMAN (AKA MARCUS GEE): “Ambiguous”
LEAH ANNE CHO and others: Asian/Asian-American
HYH and others: Asian/Asian-American
STUART OSTROW, ROCCO PALMIERI, and others: Open
JANE KRAKOWSKI, MILES NEWMAN and others: Open
A note on gender in casting: We recognize that the characters in Yellow Face are written on the gender binary using she/her and he/him pronouns. However, we highly encourage all transgender, non-binary, and gender variant artists to audition for any role with which they feel they most identify.
