CJC provides dinner for the 51 residents of the Grassroots Homeless Shelter in Columbia on the fourth Sunday of every month. The meal consists of one main course, two side dishes and dessert. Cooking is split between a few families each month. Participants decide what they want to make once the family making the main course chooses a dish. Volunteers prepare food at home and deliver it to the shelter on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Marlene sends out a quarterly signup sheet to recruit volunteers and reminders a week or two ahead of the meal date. She also cooks and delivers food when needed.
