Community Garden Committee
Saints Mary and Joseph Parish along with the Salem Girl Scouts are growing two community gardens to provide fresh vegetables to the local food pantry. One located at Mary Queen of Peace in the back near the garages. One located at Hawkins Glen Community Garden.
Throughout the summer we will need help weeding, watering and picking the vegetables. You can volunteer for a week, once a week or just one day! Help from parishioners, families, girl scout troops or just one person will help us provide fresh vegetables throughout the growing season to the food pantry! Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Mary Queen of Peace Plot - If you volunteer in the morning the garden will need to be watered. There is a water spicket and hose. There will be a bin near the garage in the shade to place any picked vegetables. The established plants need to be kept clean of weeds and grass. Any weeds picked can be placed behind the garden in the grass clippings pile.
Hawkins Glen Plot - There is no water there. You will need to carry in water. We know carting water is difficult but any amount you can manage would be a great help to the plants! Any weeds picked will have to be taken out and discarded at home. Any vegetables picked can also be dropped in the bin at Mary Queen of Peace or kept in your home and delivered to the food pantry at St. Joseph's Friday AM from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. The plot is located in the back row and will have a sign. Carting water to the garden sounds challenging but the plots themselves are right off the road. So not too far.
