PTO 2020-2021 Committee Chair Sign-Up

Longfellow Longhorns - 

Thank you for volunteering your time to chair our fundraising and/or community type events for our school. Below you will find a new list of committees for the 2020-2021 school year. We will only be requesting committee chairs at this time.  Committee members will be solicited closer to when these events/committees are ready to begin. Additional details are included in the PDF attached below.  Please direct any questions regarding the committees to our PTO email address at [email protected].

Volunteer to be a Committee Chair

5th Grade Luncheon: Committee may only be chaired by 5th grade parents. PTO recommends that it’s your last child at LF to give all parents a chance to chair this event. Plan a special “farewell” luncheon and party on the last full-day of school. (5)

Time: Hours vary. In the October time frame plan for 5th Grade T-Shirts and then in the spring begin planning (around Feb/March timeframe).

After School Enrichment Programs: Coordinate with D21, vendors and Longfellow office to bring in STEAM + Exercise programs to our children from 3:35pm to 4:35pm.

Time: Late Summer/ Early Fall, Winter (December/January) and Spring (March/April)

 

All School Lunch: Organize and oversee a free lunch for our students using an outside vendor. Usually scheduled on the last full-day before Spring Break.

Time: 4-5 hours in March timeframe.

 

Any Fundraising Idea - In the past we have done Yankee Candle or Cards for a Cause. Schedule two sale dates per year.

Time: Nov/Dec Holiday Season & March Timeframe – Few hours to tally and distribute orders

Assembly Coordinator: Select and schedule interesting and entertaining student assemblies throughout the school year (approx 3 to 4). Work with Longfellow office for approval.

Time: Few hours or so to coordinate each event.

 

Bingo Night - Booklet Prep (Help prep the prize booklet with Teacher Raffles, Silent Auction Prizes and paid advertising)

Advertising sales in December/January with booklet prep the week before the event

 

Bingo Night - Kid Raffles and Bingo Prizes (Create Kid Raffle Baskets and organize prize donations)

Collect donations as they come in and organize create prize baskets a week or two before the event

 

Bingo Night - Concessions (coordinate food, beverage and snack orders)

Determine vendors for food, place advance orders and coordinate night of the event.

 

Bingo Night - Silent Auction Prizes (help create/solicit (its mostly online requests) prizes and raffle baskets for the silent auction)

Fill out online donation forms in November/December time frame. Help

 

Bingo Night: Card & Ticket Sales (Flyers for pre-sale, organization of packets and distribution the night of)

Time: Set flyer 6 weeks out, packets week of, even night for a few hours.

 

Birthday Book Club: Coordinate $15 donations from student’s family during their birthday month, or half birthday, to the LMC.

Time: 3 hours at beginning of school year. Then 15 minutes per month (avg).

Book Fair: Manage fall & spring book fairs held during the school day and evenings during conferences. Recruit volunteers, coordinate charity change challenge & spirit days. (2)

Time: Planning time, plus 4 days for set-up, working the book fair and tear-down. Fall fair - Oct/Spring fair - April. Attend 2 local workshops (fall/spring).

Box Tops for Education: Collect and submit Box Tops sent in by Longfellow families. Organize “Box Tops Friday” one time per month. Send reminders/flyers as needed. Coordinate November & February collections. (2)

Family Fun Nights: Two times a year, plan an event for the entire school and their families to enjoy. Ideas: Chicago Wolves Game, Family Dance, STEAM Night, Family Read-a-thon. Bring the Longhorn community together for a fun evening! (2)

Time: Planning in the Fall and Winter/Spring. Hours vary depending on event selected.

 

Holiday Bake Sale: Organize the bake sale that is held during the Holiday Pop-Up Shop. (2)

Time: Full day commitment on the Saturday of the Holiday Pop-Up Shop. Plus few hours few weeks before the event advertising & organizing. November time frame.

 

Holiday Pop-Up Shop: Secure vendors to sell their “goods” or “crafts” in the gym and MPR for a day. Night before and day of requires set up and oversight to make sure event runs smoothly. (2)

Begin in August and complete by November. Full day commitment on the Saturday of event.

 

Ice Cream Social: Plan and organize ice cream socials immediately following each evening music show. Create flyer, tally orders and coordinate with ice cream vendor. (2)

Time: Held at Longfellow after evening music shows. Grades 2/3 (January) and Grades 4/5 (April). Few hours leading up to events and night of events.

 

Kindness Crew: Incorporate Kindness activities that will help students experience the intrinsic value of performing kind acts for others and make new connections with their peers and their community. Plan and coordinate Kindness Market and Day of Service (4)

Time: Hours vary throughout the year. October/November & February for national days.

Movie Night: Plan and organize Friday night at the movies! Coordinate volunteers to help set up, register attendees, sell concessions and dinner; clean-up. (2)

Time: 3 events per school year (October, January, April), requires set up, movie testing, and commitment the nights of event.

Purchaser/ Hospitality: Buy needed items for PTO events throughout the year at Sam’s Club. These requests will be made through the Committee Chairs. Plus keep inventory for various PTO functions throughout the year.

Time: 1 -2 hours per month throughout the school year.

 

Restaurant Fundraiser: Solicit local restaurants and schedule monthly “eat and earns”. Create flyers for distribution and coordinate email reminders. Arrange for collection of money from local business. (2)

Time: 2 hours per month selecting venue and advertising event.

Room Parent Coordinator: Solicit and manage head room parents. Communicate messages, assist with coordination of Halloween classroom party (Fall) and Day of Service (Dec).

Time: 3-4 hours fall/winter (Halloween & Day of Service) and working with head room parents all year on classroom needs. Year-round commitment

 

Savings Card: Work with PTO members from Cooper Middle School to solicit local businesses for discounts to be offered on card. Plan sales and arrange distribution to Longfellow families. (2)

Time: Begins June 2019 for solicitation of businesses. Print cards Aug 2019. Begin selling first day of school, curriculum night and back to school bash.

 

School Directory: Using the PTO Membership database, compile and publish (with approval) the PTO Directory of Longfellow families. Manage the 5th grade Art Cover contest.

Time: Hours vary- Late Summer and Early Fall. Directory to be available by first week of October.

 

Spiritwear Store: Coordinate Spiritwear designs and sales. Choose a logo to represent Longfellow for the tie-dye shirts for the Back to School Bash. Create flyer and collect orders. Work with vendor to set online store dates and coordinate delivery.

Time: Begins over the summer to plan for Fall Sale of Spirit Wear. Depending on Request another one in the Winter. Back to School Bash Shirt (handled by Board)

Square One Art: Work with Square One Art company liaison to organize fundraiser. Coordinate with classroom head room parent to organize project. Distribute flyers, collect orders and money. Coordinate with volunteers to help with distribution.

Time: 4-6 hours- usually done in around the winter holidays (November timeframe)

Teacher Appreciation & Conference Dinners: During conferences in fall and spring, organize a potluck dinner for staff. Coordinate breakfast or lunch and other modest “tokens of appreciation” during Teacher Appreciation Week. (3)

Time: Available from 3:00pm to 7:00pm on Fall Conference and Portfolio Night PLUS Teacher Appreciation Week in May

Technology Chair: Maintain email software, school store, PayPal/credit card readers, website and sign-up genius as well as other new items that will help make PTO more efficient.

Yearbook: Calling all Photographers! Manage student picture day in September & picture re-takes in Oct/Nov. Arrange for taking pictures at all PTO events and school activities. Use these pictures to create yearbook. Manage orders and distribute yearbook (3)
