U.S. Para Swimming
This course will be presented in-person and is offered by U.S. Para Swimming.
Peggy Ewald, Education and Coach Consultant for U.S. Paralympics Swimming will be conducting this new course as a blended certification course to include in person experiences with classroom, pool deck, and video experiences as part of the instruction.
There are pre-requisities required to register and a final assessment at the end of the course to be certified. A certificate will be provided via email upon succesful completion of the course and all course requirements.
Overview:
Level 2 curriculum parallels to the athlete PSDM (Para Swimming Development Model) Foundational 2 and Emerging level development. The course will take a deeper look into para specific governance and knowledge preparing coaches to work with developing elite para swimmers. The course include a foundamental level of expectations & standards of practice when attending para speciic meets and clinics. The course takes approximately 3 hours to complete and is divided into six (6) parts. If available a pool session will be included.
Course Content:
Part 1: What it means to represent Team USA
- Basic Media Training
- A brief look into selection procedures for World Series, Pan American Games, World Championships and Paralympic Games
- Travel Expectations of the USOPC for both the Coach and the Athlete
- USADA basics and TUE's
Part 2: Advanced stroke & technical development of a para-swimmer
- Using the rules and exceptions to improve stroke development
- DQ and protests
Part 3: Physiology of endurance training for a para-swimmer
- Energy system with modifications and benchmarks
Part 4: Communication and team culture building
- DISC profile
- How t use assessments in coaching effectively
- How to use feedback for coach and athlete improvement
- Providing performance feedback to the athlete through several mechanisms
Part 5: Optimizing performance
- Race analysis & strategies
- Measurable components of a race
- Return on investment (ROI)
- Facilitating a self-reliant athlete in regards to meet preparation and recovery
Part 6: Certification assessment and experiential learning completion

Convention center location of the classroom will be emailed at a later date and will be on the ASCA schedule.
The presentation content in it's entirety is the intellectual property and for the sole use of U.S. Para Swimming. The course will not be recorded.

Pre-Recquisites
- Current Swimming Resume (email a pdf copy to [email protected])
- Current USA Swimming or other organized swimming annual coach membership in good standing (email a pdf copy to [email protected])
- Current CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification
- Safe Sport Training (annual training is complimentary)
- Current Clear NCSI Background Check
- Concussion Protocol Training
- Current USADA CAT
- Any paperwork needed to access the campus of the USOPC Training Center grounds.
- Minimum of 2-year experience in a recognized organized competitive swimming arena working with a diverse group of swimmers.
- Successful passing of PSCC Level 1 course and assessment and all pre-requisites.
- Attend the Virtual offering of the Introduction & Orientation to Para Swimming Clinic and the Coaching a Para Swimmer Clinic July 11th, and a TBA date for signup will be emailed to you if you register for this course. NOTE: If you have attended these virtual session is the calendar year of 2022, you do not need to attend the pre-req clinics again to attend the certification course.
Coach Experiential Learning:
- Current involvement as an athlete, coach, or volunteer in an organized swimming arena developing skills to serve various para-swimmers with a disability. Attendance at a para only meet or clinic in person.
