2018 GFTH Volunteers
Gifts for the Homeless (“GFTH”), a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, is a wholly volunteer-run organization that serves the homeless of the Washington, D.C. area in two ways. First, during the group’s used clothing drive each December, GFTH solicits donations of clothing, sheets and towels, blankets and sleeping bags, hats, gloves and scarves, shoes, and travel toiletries from area law firms, corporate legal departments, government agencies, other legal vendors and the public at large. These items are sorted and delivered to area shelters and homeless service providers. Second, GFTH solicits funds, 100% of which are used to purchase new items that are often in short supply, including warm clothing, long underwear, hats, blankets, gloves, underwear and socks. All donations are tax-deductible.
We organize and hold this clothing drive each year to help supply the demand of as many DC metro shelters and facilities that serve the homeless as possible. In past years, our clothing drive donations have been delivered to 70+ such organizations. GFTH's used clothing drive, which is among the largest in the DC area, is unique in the way we sort and tailor our deliveries (men's, women's, children's, special types of clothing, toiletries, etc.) to the specific needs of each organization we serve.
As the drive begins, the clothing donations will be brought from the participating firms and organizations to this year’s sorting location. Volunteers are on duty all day Friday to receive the clothes, and make a limited number of special deliveries (drivers willing to drive their personal vehicles are needed for this purpose). We welcome volunteers to help us receive the clothes on Friday, especially in the afternoon! By Friday night, the donations will amass in a gigantic pile, the size of which needs to seen to be believed!
On Saturday, the real heavy lifting begins. Volunteers dig in to the countless bags and boxes of donated clothing and separate them by gender and type of item. The donations are then bagged, labeled, and staged for delivery according to a "shopping list" for each organization that will receive a delivery. At the same time, other volunteers will deliver the donations to the shelters throughout town (again, drivers with their personal vehicles are needed). The whole operation continues until the last bag is donated to the last shelter by mid-afternoon on Sunday.
Refreshments, including lunch on Friday and Saturday, will be provided to all volunteers. Music and an opportunity to learn more about homelessness in the D.C. area, as well as the organizations we serve, will also be part of Saturday activities, at least through the early part of the afternoon. We hope you will join us, and will sign up for multiple volunteering slots over the weekend!
