Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events & Stop the Bleed - February 2019

The James City County Police Department and Fire Department are hosting a CRASE (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events) training session followed by a Stop the Bleed training session at the Fire Training Center at 5077 John Tyler Highway. Each course will last approximately 2 hours with a break in between.  There is no charge for attendance.

The CRASE course, designed and built on the Avoid, Deny, Defend strategy developed by ALERRT in 2004, provides strategies, guidance and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event.  Topics include:

  • history and prevalence of active shooter events,
  • civilian response options,
  • medical issues, and
  • Considerations for conducting drills.

The Stop the Bleed course provides strategies, guidance and practical skills to handle a trauma related bleeding situation from an active shooter or everyday life.  The Stop the Bleed Campaign was designed after the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting in December 2012.  Topics include:

  • History of the Stop the Bleed Program
  • How to recognize a life threatening bleeding situation
  • How to use commercially available and improvised items to mitigate a bleeding situation
  • Practical application of commercially available and improvised items

These two courses are designed to bridge the gap and empower our citizens to make a difference.  They can be taken/attended together or separately. Must be at least 16 years old to attend.

All are welcome. You may stay for one or both sessions.
