United Methodist Church of Anoka
Portraits of Jesus: "Who do people say that I am?" Jesus asked his disciples. They gave different answers (Mk.8:27-30). The New Testament writers also "paint" different portraits of Jesus: prophet, healer/exorcist, "Messiah," "Son of God" - to name only a few. Why THOSE titles? And what did they mean at the time?
Each class, Duane Wacker will lead an examination of who Jesus said he was, who the New Testament writers said he was, and why, and what the church has said about Jesus. Larry Gronewold will use slides to show how Jesus was "painted" (interpreted) on canvas and in photographs. Discussion will be encouraged.
"Cleaning Leonardo de Vinci's portrait of the Mona Lisa would let it be seen in its original glory. But the painting is such an icon, and so loved in its varnished darkness, that even the slightest amount of cleaning might spark controversy" (Walter Isaacson). This class may remove some of the old varnish, but hopefully give a clearer & more complete picture of who Jesus was and who he can be for people today. The class will meet on Tuesday mornings (10:00-11:30) beginning March 5 and ending April 23. We will meet in the Lounge. Bring your own Bible.
Bring your Bible: Join pastor Rachael for a weekly bible study using a schedule of readings for each week, which we will read together and discuss. all you need to bring is your Bible - any Bible will do! you might also want a journal to write down questions, insights, and discoveries. The two options for this gathering are Thursdays starting on January 3rd at 9:30am or 6:30pm in the Lounge. Walk-ins welcome!
