The Urban Renewal Center
On May 1, 2021, the NEST winter shelter program ended and services transitioned to the The Center, a temporary shelter located at the old Greyhound Station. In previous years, once the NEST program was over, those it served found themselves back on the street. We knew that to truly and effectively combat homelessness, something had to change. The City (CSB?), in partnership with the URC, began developing plans for a temporary shelter - The Center - throughout the summer as it worked toward the goal of opening a permanent shelter and services solution center in the fall.
The outpouring of support for this initiative has been overwhelming, and we are thrilled to have you as part of the team. The Center has limited full-time staff members, so the program relies heavily on volunteers. They are at the heart of our success, not only logistically but even more in helping to create meaningful relationships and positive experiences for our guests. The benefit our guests receive from the interaction with and advocacy of our volunteers cannot be measured. It is truly remarkable to see what can happen when we are all in this together. We are deeply grateful to have you with us.
We welcome volunteers of all ages; however, for everyone’s safety and success, our guidelines require that any volunteers under 18 be accompanied by a parent and closely supervised. Please make a note on the Sign Up Genius for any volunteers under 18 so we can follow up to get you the information you need. We would love to help you and your family get connected!
All volunteers will share a range of duties that are vital to keeping the shelter running smoothly. Everything task is crucial and every person is important.
Duties will include:
- Greeting, assisting, and serving as a resource for guests.
- Making/serving coffee, snacks, and cold beverages.
- Cleaning and sanitizing tents with sprayer and vacuum/blower.
- Conducting bag checks and signing in guests on the COVID Log
- Monitoring shower trailers.
- Monitoring smoking area and outside picnic table area.
