Catherine McAuley Center
The Cedar Rapids community was devastated by the August 10th derecho storm, leaving most of the City with severe damage, a widespread power outage, and limited access to essential resources, thus causing a serious humanitarian crisis. After moving into our new building less than one month ago, the Catherine McAuley Center sustained significant roof and water damage during the storm and will require renovations. We are all coming together to support one another in wonderful ways, and we need your help to continue adapting to meet the needs of our communty.
The Catherine McAuley Center is a place of welcome, and we are certainly staying true to our mission as we outfit our former location to serve as a temporary shelter for those who have been displaced by the storm, many who are refugee families. Thanks to the efforts of several community groups and CMC staff, families will have a place to call home for the foreseeable future. The new site has regained power and will be supervised by a CMC staff member. Additionally, we will have interpreters who speak Kirundi, Kinyarwanda, Swahili, French, Spanish, and Nianja.
This unexpected expansion brings with it a sense of hope and gratitude that CMC is able to provide housing during a devastating crisis, and also a growing need for donations. Our list of immediate needs are rapidly changing and will be updated here and on our Facebook page. To donate these items to CMC, we ask that you check this list and sign up for one of the listed items only as we do not have the capacity to hold additional items at this time. Again, this list will be updated frequently as needs are changing. We are accepting financial contributions on our website at cmc-cr.org/give.
The generous outpouring of support from the community is greatly appreciated. Your contribution is allowing us to help our nieghbors in need and to continue building a welcoming community. Thank you!
