Class of 2020
Parents and Students,
The 8th grade has a service learning group that has been named the REAL AMERICANS. Their purpose is to design small actions that end racism. Last year our group coordinated Exploris donations to resettle a family from Syria. This year's 8th graders have committed to collaborating with Lutheran Carolina Services to serve another family.
At this stage we are simply trying to identify our donors. Please DO NOT send your items in at this time as we do not have storage space on campus.
We do not know the exact arrival of our family. The United Nations and U.S. Immigration will likely give us just two weeks notice to coordinate all items and set up the apartment.
Our family has been in a Zambia (Solwezi) camp for almost 20 years. The family is a mother, father, 5 children and 2 step children over the age of 18. It is not clear if the step children were orphaned in camp and adopted by this family or of some other relation. It is also not clear if they will be sent with the parents and 5 children. There are no guarantees that families will travel or arrive together.
The family speaks Kiswahili and father speaks 'some' French and English. The family fled the Democratic Republich of Congo (DRC) November 1, 2000. They have no listed medical concerns, and their nationality remains listed as the DRC. They have listed their religion as Pentecostalist. The children were born 2003, 2006, 2007, 2012, and 2018. The mother has no education listed and has worked as a farmer and making charcoal. The father has a primary education and has worked as a security guard.
Our promise at this time is to gather all of their needs for their apartment, set up, and stock them with food. Teacher, Leah Ruto's husband, speaks Kiswahili and will help us translate. Our 6th grade is making welcome cards and a calendar of key Raleigh events. We are also asked to have a delegation waiting for them at their airport arrival.
Once the arrive we will start a Go Fund Me in hopes to raise $3000 for used car. Then later down the line we are hoping to find parents working in law or experienced immigrants to assist the family in getting a U.S. Green Card. Lutheran Services Carolinas is unable to help with these two pieces.
