The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end, and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.
Narrators - Tell parts of the story for the audience, including the how the Prince was turned into the Beast, and Belle’s attack by the wolves
Belle (Vocal Range: E3 – F5) is a smart, confident young woman from a small village. A bookish young woman who falls in love with the Beast and finds the kind-hearted human inside him
Maurice (Vocal Range: Bb2 – Dd4) is an aging and eccentric inventor, but more importantly, the adoring and protective father of Belle. This non-solo singing role is perfect for the student who can have fun interpreting this crazy old man while conveying some very strong emotions: fear and fatherly love.
Beast (Vocal Range: A2 – F4) is a young prince who was hideously transformed by the Enchantress s spell. A cold-hearted prince transformed as punishment for his selfishness, but later warms, with the help of Belle, and ends up being transformed back into a handsome prince as a reward.
Gaston (Vocal Range: A2 – E4) is pompous and dim-witted. He has all the confidence in the world but lacks the humility to balance it. A highly egotistical hunter who vies for Belle's hand in marriage and is determined not to let anyone else win her heart, even if it means killing her true love
Lefou (Vocal Range: B2 – F#4) Gaston's bumbling and often mistreated sidekick. Needs to be Gaston’s foil and should double the laughs for them both.
Silly Girls - The Silly Girls are in love with Gaston and will do almost anything just to be near him.
Lumiere (Vocal Range: F#2 – F#4) - The kind-hearted but rebellious maître d' of the Beast's castle, he has been transformed into a candelabra. He has a habit of disobeying his master's strict rules, sometimes causing tension between them, but the Beast often turns to him for advice, and he is arguably the Beast's closest friend after Belle.
Cogsworth (Vocal Range: A2 – E4) - The British castle majordomo and Lumiere's best friend, transformed into a clock. While he is as good-natured as Lumiere, he is extremely loyal to the Beast so as to save himself and anyone else any trouble, often leading to friction between himself and Lumiere.
Mrs. Potts (Vocal Range: F#3 – G5) is the castle an endearing cook who is becoming a teapot. The actor you cast needs a strong, sweet voice and should be able to convey comforting, maternal qualities amidst the chaos that is breaking out in the castle.
Babette (Vocal Range: C4 – F5) is the maid of the castle who is turning into a feather duster. She misses the finer things in life. Babette is happy to be at Belle’s service at a moment s notice, but her true heart comes through in Human Again.
Madame De La Grande Bouche (Vocal Range: C#4 – D5) - The castle's authority over fashion, and a former opera singer, turned into a wardrobe. Madame is larger-thanlife in everything she does, including her singing and dancing.
Chip (Vocal Range: A3 – F5) - A teacup and Mrs. Potts' son
Old Beggar Woman/Enchantress - The Old Beggar Woman/Enchantress should be portrayed by an actor with a flair for the visually dramatic as this is a non-speaking role. Her transformation in the Prologue needs to entice the audience into the story.
Monsieur D'arque (Vocal Range: D3 – A4) is the proprietor of the lunatic asylum who has a sinister personality.
Servants - The Servants of the castle can include Statues, a Dust Pan, Flatware, Plates, an Egg Timer, Napkins, a Carpet, Salt & Pepper Shakers and any other household (or castle hold items) you and your cast can imagine. These enchanted characters are the Rockettes of the castle.
Villagers - The Villagers are the inhabitants of Belle s town. The group must provide vocal power throughout the show and dance in the production numbers.
