Our gardens in front of the Swansboro Elementary School are well on their way and now need regular watering to get them through the summer. We are primarily concerned with watering 2 dogwood trees, 4 hydrangea, and 6 roses in the two beds by the front gate and the redbud by the flagpole. The dogwoods and redbud have water bags. If all three are empty, it takes approximately 1 1/2 hours to refill due to variable water pressure. Other plantings should be watered as needed. In addition to the two gardens flanking the main gate and the flagpole garden, we are maintaining the sunflower garden in the corner of E. 32nd Street and Midlothian, the garden around the school sign, the two gardens on the right as you enter from E. 32nd Street, and a small circular garden around a stump. All are in the front yard area, not the courtyard.
We are asking for watering on Wednesday and Saturday. However, those days are not firm. One could come on Tuesday instead of Wednesday and on Sunday instead of Saturday. The hose is located at the corner of the building near the right, outer edge of the courtyard.
While waiting for the water bags to fill, feel free to pull a few weeds or pick up litter, read a book, or let your kids play on the playground. DURING THE SUMMER: If you come during the day (M-Th) the school staff will be there. AFTER LABOR DAY: If you come during the school day, please sign in as a visitor in the front office. You will need your driver's license to do so. If you come after hours or on the weekend, please come with a someone else. In 20 years of volunteering at Swansboro, I have never felt unsafe, but we always want to err on the side of caution. Thank you for helping to make Swansboro Elementary an inviting place and a source of pride for the children who will be arriving in the fall.
