St. Francis Meal Ministry

2019 - 2020 Helen Wright Center for Women Dinner Meal Ministry

The Helen Wright Center for Women, a program of Urban Ministries of Wake County, has been providing warm food, genuine care and safe shelter from the weather and violence to single women without children in their care, for years. Guests of the center are offered an opportunity to break the cycle of homelessness and achieve self-sufficiency through intensive case management services.

Currently the center, one of only two shelters in the area for single women without children in their care, is being asked to expand to meet the needs of a growing number of women and as a result more volunteers are needed in our dinner meal ministry to help coordinate and to provide a meal every 3rd Wednesday of each month.

With your support we will prepare enough food for 66 meals each 3rd Wednesday of the month. We also eat and visit with the women during the meal which in addition to serving is a beautiful way to live the Gospel and our Baptismal call to reach out to our sisters in need.  Please join us!  Thank you for any help you can provide!

The address of the Helen Wright Center for Women is 401 W Cabarrus St. Raleigh 27601.  We provide the same meal each month.  Here is the menu.

Menu

Meatloaf, potatoes and apples. If you sign up to provide this, please prepare:

  • 2 - 2 lbs meatloaves - fully cooked in disposable containers or foil, and hot when you deliver them to the monthly coordinator.
  • 10 baked potatoes wrapped in foil, hot
  • 10 washed apples

Green Beans, iced tea and dessert. If you sign up to provide this, please:

  • purchase 4 - 50oz or 3 - 50oz cans (or equivalent), depending on the drop off time you signed up for, of green beans (these will be warmed at the center)
  • purchase instant powder iced tea to be prepared at the center, or 2 gallons of pre-made
  • prepare/purchase a simple dessert of your choice (cookies, brownies, cake, etc).

Bread/Rolls, sour cream, butter and ketchup.

  • The Monthly Coordinator will purchase and provide enough of these for the dinner.

Food Delivery/Drop Off

  • You will receive a reminder email from SignUp Genius 2 days before you are scheduled.
  • When you are scheduled to provide food, please deliver your food to the drop off location between 5:45 and 6:00 pm or between 6:15 and 6:45pm (depending on which time slot you signed up for).
  • The drop off location is the Walgreens parking lot near the Bank of America, at the intersection of Creedmoor and Strickland.
  • The St. Francis meal is always on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
  • You will be contacted by the Monthly Coordinator the Sunday before you are scheduled, so you will have his/her contact information.  If you were to experience a last minute conflict (emergency, illness, etc.), please contact the Monthly Coordinator immediately so she/he can make arrangements to cover your obligations.
  • If you are the Monthly Coordinator, please contact Angela Zemonek (919-931-3293) for further details and the contact information of all people signed up to provide food on your evening.

Monthly Coordinator

  • It is the Monthly Coordinator's responsibility to make sure the meal will be provided and to serve the meal at the HWCW.
  • The Monthly Coordinator should contact Angela Zemonek (919-931-3293) for further details and the contact information of all people signed up to provide food at his/her scheduled date and time.
  • The Monthly Coordinator will contact all the people providing parts of the meal to confirm on the Sunday before their scheduled date.
  • If there is ample food, please take a plate, have a seat with the ladies and enjoy yourself.  Visiting with people who find themselves in harm’s way is a beautiful and meaningful way to live the Gospel.  And who knows?  You might be surprised to see how Jesus shows up while you’re doing so!

Serving

  • It is the Monthly Coordinator's responsibility to make sure the meal will be provided and to serve the meal at the HWCW.
  • If you are providing food and would like to serve, please contact the scheduled Monthly Coordinator to see if there is room.  And please sign up to be a Monthly Coordinator sometime.
  • We do encourage our volunteers to go to the center to serve.  It is a very rewarding and enjoyable experience not to mention a beautiful and meaningful way to live the Gospel and our Baptismal call to reach out to our sisters in need.  Plus, you may just experience Jesus in a new way!
  • Families are always welcome to serve together!

Administrative Coordinator

  • We are very much in need of a person to provide overall organization and coordination of the ministry volunteers and insure coverage of each monthly meal.  If you are interested in this, please contact Angela Zemonek at 919-931-3293.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or suggestions. We look forward to serving our sisters in need with you in the coming months. Thank you again for any help you can provide and for your dedication to this ministry!

Fondly,

Shannon Burnette  and Angela Zemonek (919-931-3293)
