This group program consists of 8 adults, ages 18 years or older, that spend one- to two-days a week in a group setting. The Adult Program emphasizes social-skill interactions, interacting in teams to complete a task, using clear speech, producing complete sentences, working together to solve an important problem, or working together to learn how to complete social-activities. The Adult Communication Program supports the therapeutic-based development of individuals with Down syndrome, with achieving the following goals:
- Increase social skills, with focus on group participation and increasing leisure activities.
- Increase language development, with focus on appropriateness, maintaining conversation, vocabulary, sentence structure, and non-verbal social language.
- Increase speech skills, with focus on talking slower, practice on correct sound production, and awareness of being intelligible.
- Increase literacy skills, with focus on sight-word reading, reading comprehension, writing words, sentences, and paragraphs.
