Kalamazoo in Bloom

Community Planting Activities 2020

PLEASE NOTE: We still plan to plant flowers this summer, but when we do this and how we engage volunteers may change based on the order to stay home and stay safe. An email will be sent in early May with an update. Thank you for your support and enthusiasm of Kalamazoo in Bloom!

Volunteers are needed to help with planting activities in Portage and downtown Kalamazoo. There are several opportunities and groups are encouraged. Sign up for one or more. If you can't arrive at the start time, come when you can. We welcome all the help we can get. Let us know your shirt size to help us place a more accurate order for shirts that are handed out on our two big community planting days (adult unisex sizes only, while supplies last). Portage planting day is May 15 and Kalamazoo is May 21. On these two days, pizza lunch will be provided.

All volunteers for each activity are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes (sneakers/boots) and bring gardening gloves, a kneeling pad, trowel, and a water bottle (if you have them). On May 15 and May 21, we will be adding mulch to the beds so buckets, snow shovels, and wheelbarrows/carts will be helpful too.

For those interested in signing up as a BED PLANTING SUPERVISOR, this activity is reserved for experienced volunteers who have planted with us before and can be "flexible" while working with others to guide them on how to plant a flower bed according to drawings. You'll be working with different kinds of personalities and people with varying levels of planting experience.

If you'd like to volunteer for something other than planting, please consider volunteering to help with setup and registration. Contact Monika Trahe for these opportunities and if you have additional questions: [email protected] or 269.548.6232. Thank you!
