MLK Day of Service Volunteers 2021
Historically, the University of Richmond has celebrated the life and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a day filled with service and community opportunities as well as an amazing commemoration ceremony. While we may not be able to celebrate his legacy in the same way as we have in the past, we welcome faculty, staff, and students to participate in this DIY service opportunity, organized by the Carrico Center and in coordination with the University's Office of Common Ground.
Volunteers will make no sew fleece blankets for the foster children served by Elk Hill. Elk Hill enables children and families to transform overwhelming challenges into successful futures. Through specialized education, community based mental health services and residential treatment programs, children and families can discover the academic, vocational, behavioral, and relationship skills they need to be successful. When a child arrives at Elk Hill, he or she has just left a dangerous situation and is entering a safe yet unfamiliar environment. Elk Hill tries to help the child through transition with a welcome box that includes one of these blankets, which the child keeps even after he or she leaves Elk Hill.
Volunteers can sign up as an individual commitment or on behalf of a household. However, each volunteer slot = one blanket kit, so register accordingly.
Volunteers can pick-up a fleece blanket kit in the Dean's Suite starting January 19th. Each kit will include fabric and detailed instructions. Volunteers will need to supply their own scissors and measuring tool (e.g., ruler, measuring tape, etc.).
*Please note that all students must be tested for COVID-19 on campus prior to the start of classes. Testing will take place Monday, Jan. 11 through Friday, Jan. 15. Students will not be able to return to campus or access campus buildings/facilities until they’ve received negative test results.*
All completed blankets must be returned by February 1st.
