Young children growing up in poverty face chronic trauma and toxic stress, which might be exhibited as lack of control over their bodies, emotions, and behavior. We'll discuss ways to help children learn to recognize the emotions they're feeling, and learn the vocabulary needed to name those emotions. Most importantly, we'll learn simple and practical techniques to use during your reading sessions that can help children feel in control and successful, leading to a more enjoyable and affirming reading session.
This is the same program that has previously been offered to Volunteer Readers. We encourage EVERY volunteer to attend this Trauma/Emotional Literacy workshop at least once during your tenure as a Ready Reader. If you've attended our Trauma workshop in the past, you don't need to attend this round, but you're welcome to do so. :)
