Summer Camp 2020 Junior Counselors
Please read all the information below before committing to volunteer!
What is a Junior Counselor?
Junior Counselors (JCs) assist adult staff with daily tasks and interact with young campers to enhance the day-camp experience.
What is the time commitment?
Dunwoody Nature Center offers summer camp at the nature center (5343 Roberts Drive) for age 4 and rising K-5th grade. We also offer camp at Island Ford Park on the Chattahoochee River (8850 Roberts Drive) for rising 4th-8th grade. Summer camps at the nature center run weekly May 26 through August 13. Counselors can choose the number of weeks they want to commit to, as well as whether to work a full day (9:00am – 4:00pm) or half day (9:00am – 1:30pm) shift. Half day shifts assist with the 4 year old camps. Full day shifts are assigned to rising K-5 classes.
Summer camps at Island Ford run from June 8th - July 31st. Island Ford Junior Counselors commit to volunteering for a full day from 8:30am-4:30pm and will be with the oldest group of campers (rising 4th thru 8th grade).
What are the qualifications?
Nature Center Junior Counselors must be age 13 or older and Island Ford Junior Counselors must be age 15 or older. All JC's must attend a pre-camp orientation, even if they have served before. Prospective Junior Counselors who did NOT provide references in 2019 must also provide 2 contacts for references (teacher, coach, mentor, employer; no relatives or friends). Follow this link to the reference contact form: LINK
If you already completed the reference check in 2019, you do not need to do it again for 2020. If you are unsure, please contact [email protected]
You may sign up for your desired volunteer shifts prior to reference check. Caroline will contact you upon reference approval.
Staff and children depend upon the JCs to arrive on time and ready for work each day that they are scheduled. Successful JCs will be mature, reliable, flexible, energetic and creative!
What are the benefits?
Working at camp helps develop responsibility, independence, adaptability and teamwork. At the end of the program, the JC's may request a letter from the Nature Center, testifying to their hours worked which can be used on a resume, college application, or school-required community service hours. (You have up to 1 year to request verification of hours. After one year, we will not be able to verify your hours served.)
Do I need to attend training?
For our summer JC’s, we offer three orientation sessions. All JC’s (new AND returning) are required to attend only one of the sessions. Parents are encouraged to stay for a short meeting with our Camp Director during the first 15-20 minutes of the session. Orientation dates are: Weds., May 6 @ 5:30-6:30pm; Sat., May 9 @ 9:00a-10:00a; and Tues., June 9 @ 10:30-11:30am. All sessions will be held at the Nature Center. UPDATE: If school closures and/or nature center closures endure past April 30, the Junior Counselor Orientation will be offered through a virtual platform rather than in person. Email updates/instructions will be sent to volunteers who are registered on the Sign Up Genius page.
Is there a cost?
There is no cost associated with the JC program at Dunwoody Nature Center. It is a volunteer position.
Please email [email protected] with any questions.
