Upon discovering a stray dog on her back porch, Mattie Rigsbee decides she’s too old to keep a pet and calls the dogcatcher. Little does she know that the dogcatcher, Lamar Benfield, will open her eyes to a world that includes car theft, prison breaks, and his nephew, a juvenile delinquent named Wesley, who is as desperate for a family as she is. Add in to the mix, her over-protective next-door-neighbors and her 50-year-old never-married son, all joining the drama. Armed with only her mouth-watering cornbread and a deep abiding faith, Mattie is determined to bring Wesley to the side of God and good Southern manners. And there will be hymn-singing!
