Knights of Columbus Father Baumgartner Council
It's been a tradition that, for one week each Fall, the St. Irenaeus parish normally hosts individuals and families from the South Oakland Shelter (SOS). During that week, parish volunteers feed, house and provide entertainment and transportation to/from work for these less fortunate of our area. And one day during that week, our Council has always provided the evening meal for our guests.
Well, this year - because of COVID - is still not "normal times". For health reasons, our SOS guests are not staying here in the parish, but rather are being housed and cared for at the Rodeway Inn hotel in Auburn Hills - same as last year. However, during the week of Nov 7 to Nov 14, the St. Irenaeus parish will still have responsibility for "hosting" these guests, albeit in their new location. And, as in previous years, our Council will again be preparing an evening meal - to be delivered to their hotel.
On Monday, November 8, our Council will handle the preparation, packaging and delivery of 100 carry-out meals to our SOS friends. Similar to past years, each meal will consist of chicken and broasted potatoes (provided by North Shack), a vegetable, cole slaw and dessert. We'll pack the meals in the same clamshell styrofoam carry-out containers we use for our Spaghetti dinners. We've been given permission to use the St. Irenaeus kitchen as long is we adhere to COVID guidelines (wear a mask when entering or leaving the building). And with this change in serving location also comes a change in the time the meals have been requested. We have been asked to have all meals delivered to the hotel by no later than 4:30 pm, so we'll need to start preparing the meals much earlier than in the past. Once we arrive at the hotel with the meals, we have been asked this year to actually deliver them to individual rooms, using hotel maps provided by onsite parish SOS volunteers. Assuming we assign four Knights to handle meal delivery, then each of two 2-person teams will be responsible for distributing meals to 20 rooms. All our volunteers should be wrapped up and out the door (of St. Irenaeus or the hotel) by no later than 5:00 pm.
We're looking for volunteers to assist with these activities. Please let us know on the sign-up sheet below if you (and your family members) can help out. The work isn't difficult, you'll enjoy the camaraderie of fellow Knights, you'll get a free meal out of it plus the satisfaction of knowing you're helping our area's disadvantaged.
Please come join us!
