Knights of Columbus Father Baumgartner Council

Lenten Fish Fries

It's once again time for our biggest annual Council event -- our Lenten Fish Fries. Every Friday during Lent (Feb 28 thru Apr 10) we serve hundreds of hungry guests at the Rochester Community House between 5:00 and 7:30 pm, many of whom have been coming for years - if not decades. Our menu includes both baked and fried pollock (a very mild whitefish), french fries or baked potatoes, macaroni & cheese, cole slaw, roll & butter and drinks. And guests can come back for seconds.

The Fish Fries are also our most "people intensive" events- on a typical Friday, we'll usually have 50-60 members and their families volunteer - and we need every one of them. On these Fridays, some of our team are at the GFS grocery before 7:30 am to load up food and supplies, and our last workers are finishing clean-up around 9:00 pm. In between, our volunteers perform dozens of different jobs, from cooking the food, setting up the dining room and preparing slaw & condiments to staffing the serving line, selling tickets and bussing tables. Many of our Council members are "old hands" who have been participating in the Fish Fries for years. But for our newer members and those who have never before worked this event, we'd encourage you to review the illustrated article "A Day at the Fish Fry", under Related Files below, to get a better sense of what hosting a Fish Fry really entails.

Given all the work to be done, we've set up shifts that cover the morning, the early afternoon, the late afternoon and the evening. So, no matter your schedule, there's probably a shift that would work for you.

Please come help us out if you possibly can. Use the sign-up sheet below to tell us when you'd like to work. And remember to invite your spouse, kids and grandkids to come as well - there are jobs for everybody. You might also want to consider baking or buying a dessert that you can bring along when you come. Several of our spouses sell these home-made desserts to our guests from a table in the dining room, and the additional money we make really helps out.

To save you time while signing up, first check the boxes for all the shifts you want to volunteer for, then click the SUBMIT & SIGN UP button at the bottom of the page.
