UU Fellowship of Winston-Salem

City With Dwellings 1/14/19 - Serving Dinner at the Homeless Shelter

A team from the UU Fellowship is needed to provide dinner for 30 guests at the overnight shelter at Augsburg Lutheran Church on Monday, January 14th. The shelter is part of the City With Dwellings program, a community-wide effort to provide emergency shelter in winter and to end homelessness. More information about the organization is available at citywithdwellings.org.

Please sign up below to bring food and/or help to serve and clean up after the meal.

NOTE: This year we are planning to have a VEGAN MENU. That means no meat, no dairy, no animal products (e.g., eggs, cheese, or honey), but with plenty of protein like starchy beans and grains like couscous as part of the main entrees, and other vegan items for the remainder of the menu.

If you have questions, please let me know.

Additional information:

Augsburg Lutheran Church faces Fifth Street, but the easiest entrance to the Fellowship Hall is at 847 Pilot View Street. (It's a large unmarked concrete building, that is across the street from the marked small house 835 Pilot View Street.) A covered entrance leads to the Fellowship Hall. At 7:00 pm, the doors may still be locked, people should be milling around outside, but knock on the door or call my cell phone (336-480-8172) to be let in. I will be there early, so anyone can just call me if they have any problems. Those bringing food or supplies can drop it off between 7:00 and 7:30 and then leave.

Information from Cities With Dwellings:
Please arrive by 7:30 p.m. ready to set up your meal. You may drop off at the portico entrance of the Family Life Center. [Augsburg's Pilot View entrance] Our neighbors check-in at a different location but usually arrive by 7:45 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at the latest. Provide an entree, side dish(es), and dessert (optional but very much appreciated). Water will be available to drink. You may bring other types of beverage if you like. Please provide the plates, napkins, cups and utensils your meal needs for serving. Please feel free to stay and enjoy fellowship with our guests after dinner until 'lights out'. This task is more fun and affordable when a team works together. Children under 18 years of age may participate when accompanied by a parent or guardian. There are no bathroom facilities available to children under 18 yrs. of age once guests arrive and they must stay within the dining area and may not be in the sleeping, lounging, or bathroom areas of the facility. Tips: Protein is expensive to buy on the street but important to our diet so please make sure that any meatless entree contains an alternate form of protein. Often times firm fruits or vegetables are hard on teeth that receive little or no dental care.
