Volunteers

Help with Read Me Month

Read Me Day was started in 1986 by Frankie DeWees, a teacher at East Hickman Elementary School in Lyles, Tennessee, to celebrate the importance of reading and providing literary services to Nashville’s youth. The event was called “Read Me Day” because students, teachers, and visiting readers were invited to wear a shirt, cap, or pin with a message on it so the children could “read the reader.” Over the years, the emphasis has expanded into a more general celebration of reading, but the name stuck with us.

Book’em has sponsored Read Me Day since 1990, and has recently expanded it into Read Me Month, holding four celebrations at four different elementary schools throughout the month of February.

We are looking for volunteers to help put up signs, direct parking, greet and check in guests, help with refreshments, help readers find books, help with cleanup afterward, take photos and/or video, and generally be flexible to help with other duties as needed.
