A Matter that Matters!
The challenges represented in the Poverty Simulation are a daily struggle for many. Alabama has the sixth highest poverty rate in the nation. Many of our neighbors, friends and students face realities such as food insecurity, housing instability, homelessness, lack of reliable and affordable transportation, domestic violence, the inability to afford basic necessities, unemployment and underemployment.
It is difficult for those of us who have enough to truly understand the situations that families living in poverty experience every day – the decisions they have to make and the fears and frustrations they feel. That is why we are inviting you to walk a mile in the shoes of those facing poverty by participating in a Poverty Simulation.
Our Poverty Simulation provides participants to assume the role of a low-income family member living on a limited budget.
For the participants to experience this, we need volunteers to be the workers of the community they have to interact with on a daily basis....work, school, pay bills, look for assistance, etc.
If you would like to volunteer for 2.5 hours, we can use you! (We will provide a hour training before the simulation begins). We do some during the morning and afternoon, all depends on the day.
