Asylum Seeker Snack Bags
Children’s Ministries is partnering with Missions to provide support and love for our brothers and sisters in Christ seeking legal asylum from Central America. You may be familiar with the Greyhound Bus Station Ministry that has formed at Myers Park United Methodist Church. This group meets families who are seeking legal asylum at the bus station to provide food, beverages, and travel activities. We have been invited to help by creating snack bags for the children of these families.
As you are preparing these snack bags with your family, you can explain to your children that the families who will receive these snacks are on a very long (days long!) bus trip from Central America and that when they stop in Charlotte to receive these snacks, they often have to get back on a bus to continue on to somewhere else. Please share as much about legal asylum seekers as you are comfortable. I think all children can relate to wanting a snack on a long road trip, but other children may be ready for more information.
The estimated need for snack bags is 100 per week. Please sign up for however many bags your family can fill and return the bags to the Children’s Ministries office on Sunday mornings or Monday-Thursday during business hours. Use quart size bags and please place THREE items from the list below in each bag:
- Individual fruit cups with a plastic spoon
- Individually wrapped breakfast bars
- Individually wrapped crackers with cheese, peanut butter, etc.
- Individual bags of pretzels, goldfish, etc.
- Individual box of raisins
Thank you for partnering with us and showing your children how to love and serve others.
