Journey’s Aviation is hosting an in-person ground school this summer at the Boulder Municipal Airport. This course is aimed at pre-solo students training for their Private Pilot’s license. No experience is necessary and student pilots of all levels of experience are welcome to attend. The purpose of the course is to prepare students for the Private Pilot Written test as well as the Checkride Oral Exam. An endorsement to take the written test will be given to students at the end of the course upon successful completion of 3 practice tests with scores above 90%.
Course Length and Times
The course will meet Mondays and Wednesdays at Journey’s Aviation from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. It will run for eight weeks from June 20 to August 10.
Missed Classes and Makeup
If students miss classes, they must be made up individually with the course instructor before Week Six of class. If the student does not make up the classes missed, they will not be able to receive an endorsement to take the written test. Individual makeup sessions will be charged at the normal instructor rate of $55 per hour.
The cost is $350 per person for the entire course. This price includes a $50 supply fee that may be partially waived on a case-by-case basis if the student already has the supplies. The first 20 people who pay will guarenteed a spot in the class. The class will be considered full when 20 people have paid for the class with the front desk. Payment can be made with Credit Card, Check or Venmo with the front desk at Journeys Aviation. Waitlisted students may be invited to join the class if the first 20 people to pay do not show up for class.
The Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK) [FAA-H-8083-25B] is the required textbook for the course. A hard copy can be purchased on Amazon/Sporty’s Pilot Shop for $17-$20. A digital copy can be downloaded from the FAA’s website for free.
Students must also have a written test prep software. Students can either create a free account with Sporty’s Study Buddy Test Prep or purchase test prep software from another company such as Gleim* ($60).
*The main advantage of paying for software is more features (such as explanations for answers and different study modes). The free software should be sufficient for students on a budget.
Students will be provided with:
- FAA Private Pilot Written Test Supplement (FAA-CT-8080-2)
- Navigation Plotter
- E6B Flight Computer
- Sectional/TAC Chart
- Flight/Airport Operations
- Aeronautical Decision Making
- Human Factors
- Aircraft Systems
- Airworthiness and Regulations
- Weather Theory
- Weather Sources
- Aircraft Performance
- Weight and Balance
- Cross-Country Flight Planning
- Radio Navigation
Please note, this signup has 30 spaces. There are twenty spaces available for class. In order to guarentee your spot in class you must pay at the front desk. After twenty people have paid, the remainder of people signed up for class are considered waitlisted.
