We have been given an incredible opportunity to help students in grades 5th-8th who are at "Below Basic" reading and math levels have life-changing breakthroughs.
Statistics say that the odds are against them: "The 4th grade is the watershed year. We can predict that if a child is not reading proficiently in the 4th grade, he or she will have approximately a 78 percent chance of not catching up." http://www.begintoread.com/research/literacystatistics.html.
It is impossible for students who are below basic in reading and math to comprehend all the other subjects they are required to learn. Thus they are pushed through to the next grade level filled with feelings of inadequacy, incompetence, and embarassment.
Therefore, Philip Simmons Middle School has invited into "Classroom #734" volunteers who are willing to invest in kids to help them lay crucial foundations that includes reading and math.
