Dearborn Youth Symphony 2019-20 Membership Auditions

Welcome to the sign-up page for the Dearborn Youth Symphony's September membership auditions. All current and potential new members who would like to join the Dearborn Youth Symphony for the 2019-20 concert season will need to audition to secure a spot in one of our orchestras.

  • Auditions will be held on September 9th & September 10th, 2019 at the Ford Community Performing Arts Center which is located at 15801 Michigan Ave, Dearborn, MI 48126
  • Current String Orchestra members please sign up in the String Orchestra Audition Room. Advancement to the Concert Orchestra will be determined based on the String Orchestra audition.
  • Flute choir members wishing to also play in concert/symphony orchestra need only to audition once by selecting a time slot in the flute choir section.
  • Returning musicians should sign up for the ensemble they are currently a member of.
  • New auditioning musicians can find links to our Facebook page and audition requirements below and should refer to the ensemble descriptions below to help them determine which group to audition for.

Ensemble Descripitions

All ensembles rehearse on Mondays from September to May.

  • String Orchestra is a beginning level group comprised of string instruments only. (Violin, viola, cello, and bass) Rehearsal 5:30-6:30pm.
  • Concert Orchestra is a full orchestra comprised of intermediate level musicians who play standard orchestral arrangements. Rehearsal 5:30-7:00pm
  • Intermediate and Advanced Flute Choirs are unique ensembles featuring flutists who perform arrangements in a group setting. Advanced rehearses 6:15-7:15pm, Intermediate 7:00-8:00pm.
  • Symphony Orchestra is a full orchestra comprised of advanced musicians who perform professional orchestral repertoire. Rehearsal 7:15-9:00pm

Audition Requirements

STRING ORCHESTRA

  • 1-2 minute solo piece (*) from Suzuki Book I or beyond showing technique and tone quality. Solo will be heard unaccompanied and does not need to be memorized
  • One 2-octave major and minor scale, memorized (Violin, Viola, and Cello)
  • One 1-octave major and minor scale (Bass)

* Suggested String Orchestra audition solos

  • Violin& Viola - Piece from the end of Essential Elements Book I up through Suzuki Book II
  • Cello - Rigadon, Minuet in C, The Happy Farmer or Minuet No. 2 (all from Suzuki Cello School Book I) or one of the first eight pieces from Suzuki Cello School Book II
  • String Bass - Piece from Suzuki Bass School Book I

FLUTE CHOIRS

  • Two minute excerpt of solo (*) piece of your choice which demonstrates your playing ability. Solo will be heard unaccompanied and does not need to be memorized.
  • Two 2-octave scales, one major and one melodic minor, memorized

* Suggested flute audition solos (Intermediate Flute Choir)

  • Sonata in F major (Telemann), Sicilienne (Faure), Madrigal (Gaubert)

* Suggested flute audition solos (Advanced Flute Choir)

  • Widor Suite, mvt 1, Fantasie (Faure), Fantasie pastorale hongroise (Doppler)

CONCERT ORCHESTRA

Strings

  • 2 minute excerpt of solo (*) piece of your choice which demonstrates your playing ability. Solo will be heard unaccompanied and does not need to be memorized.

Scales:

  • Violin and viola - One 2-octave scale of your choice (memorized) which includes 3rd position (i.e., violin - D Major, viola - G Major)
  • Cello - one 2-octave major scale of your choice (memorized) which includes 4th position (i.e., G Major)
  • String bass - one 1-octave major scale of your choice (memorized) which includes shifting (i.e., D Major)

* Suggested Concert Orchestra audition solos for strings:

  • Violin - Piece from Suzuki Book III and IV up to Vivaldi
  • Viola - Piece from Suzuki Book III and IV up to Telemann
  • Cello - Witches Dance, Two Grenadiers, Gavotte (Gossec), Bouree (Handel) from Suzuki Cello School Book II, any piece from Suzuki Cello Book III, Bach G Major Suite, Minuets only
  • String Bass - Piece from Suzuki Book II or III

Winds/Brass

  • 2 minute excerpt of solo piece of your choice which demonstrates your playing ability. Solo will be heard unaccompanied and does not need to be memorized.
  • Two 2-octave scales of your choice from keys including up to 4 flats and sharps, one major and one harmonic minor (memorized and at varying tempi)
  • One 2-octave chromatic scale staring from note of your choice (memorized)

Percussion

  • Two solos/etudes of your choice, from two of the following categories: mallet percussion, timpani, snare drum. Solos should be limited to 2-3 minutes each. Portions of solos are acceptable.
  • Two 2-octave major scales of your choice, form keys up to 3 flats and 3 sharps, memorized.
  • Two rudiments of your choice form the following list: Flams, drags, single paradiddles, multiple bounce roll (soft to loud), memorized.
  • Instruments are available at the audition site, but musicians are welcome to bring their own sticks and mallets.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Strings

  • 2 minute excerpt of solo (*) piece of your choice which demonstrates your playing ability. Solo will be heard unaccompanied and does not need to be memorized.
  • Two 3-octave scales of your choice, one major and one melodic minor with vibrato, memorized and at varying tempi (Violin, Viola, Cello).
  • Two 2-octave scales of your choice, one major and one melodic minor with vibrato, memorized and at varying tempi (String bass).

* Suggested Symphony Orchestra audition solos for strings

  • Violin - Suzuki Book IV, Vivaldi on, or a more advanced piece.
  • Viola - Suzuki Book IV, Telemann on, or a more advanced piece.
  • Cello - Suzuki Book V or above, E Minor Sonata (Marcello), Chanson Triste (Tchaikovsky), Tarantella (Squire), Bach G Major Suite, excluding Minuets.

Winds/Brass

  • 2 minute excerpt of solo piece of your choice which demonstrates your playing ability. Solo will be heard unaccompanied and does not need to be memorized.
  • Two 2-octave scales of your choice form keys including up to 5 flats and 6 sharps; one major and one from either the harmonic or melodic minor form (memorized and at varying tempi).
  • One 2-octave arpeggio of your choice (memorized).
  • One 2-octave major scale in thirds, of your choice, from keys including up to 4 flats and 4 sharp (memorized).
  • One 2-octave chromatic scale starting from note of your choice (memorized).

Percussion

  • Three solos of your choice, one from each of the following categories: mallet percussion, timpani, snare drum. Solos should be limited to no more than 3 minutes each, with a total of no more than 8 minutes for all three solos. Etudes and portions of solos are acceptable, but should demonstrate appropriate musicality and technical ability.
  • Two 2-octave major scales of your choice, form keys up to 4 flats and 4 sharps (memorized).
  • Two rudiments of our choice from the following list: (Flams, drags, single paradiddles, double stroke roll, mutiple bounce roll (soft and loud), memorized.
  • Instruments are available at the audition site, but musicians are welcome to bring their own sticks and mallets.

Harp

  • 2 minute excerpt of solo piece of your choice which demonstrates your playing ability. Solo will be heard unaccompanied and does not need to be memorized.
  • An etude, orchestra excerpt or cadenza of your choice.
