Luminaria - What Is It?
a Christmas lantern consisting of a tea light set in a small paper bag weighted with sand and typically placed with others along a driveway, sidewalk, or rooftop as a holiday decoration.
Each year Willo lights as many as 9,900 luminaria but ONLY if the community comes together to make it happen!
What's Needed From Block Captains
Truthfully? Very little is needed from you if you delegate! Like the saying goes "many hands make light work".
Each block captain needs to bring a 5 gallon bucket to load with sand and pick up a box containing 210 paper bags and 210 LED tealights from the organizer. (Due to budget constraints this year we are doing with fewer bags/LEDs) You also need to schedule a time and place for your neighbors to build 250 luminaria, set them out along the sidewalks and "light" them on the first night. You get 1 LED tealight for each bag that will last the entire event.
It's a great opportunity for the block to hold a pot luck holiday party too! You don't have to host the build party. It can be at anyone's house and it's typically held outside.
Each block needs at least 1 volunteer to cover it OR THE BLOCK WILL GO DARK. You can volunteer for more than one block. The organizer will email you additional guidance to help make your effort as easy and hassle-free as possible.
Identifying Each Block
There are 44 blocks in Willo. Most streets have 3 blocks. These are commonly referred to as the 100, 300 and 500 blocks. The 100 block is between 1st & 3rd Avenues, 300 is between 3rd & 5th and 500 is between 5th & 7th. Why? Look at the house numbers. On the 100 block all houses are less than 100. On the 300 block, all house numbers are in the 300s and for the 500 block, you got it, all houses are 500-something.
