Churches of Charles: Earth Day of Service

Join the Churches of Charles for a few projects to celebrate Earth Day (a few days late on Sunday, April 28) that will inform, educate, and get you and your family out communing with nature.

You are invited to sign up for as many activities as your schedule allows.

CARES Garden at Gallagher Mansion
431 Notre Dame Ln, Baltimore, MD 21212
Time: 1:30pm-4pm
Contact: Rachael Neill, [email protected]

The CARES Food Pantry is planting new raised garden beds on the GEDCO Gallagher Mansion property to provide more fresh produce to their Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday clients. If you like getting your hands dirty and getting gardens started, this is the project for you.

Glenwood Life Recovery Garden
516 Glenwood Ave, Baltimore, MD 21212
Time: 2pm-4pm
Contact: Precious Frailing, [email protected]

The Glenwood Life Counseling Center provides treatment and services to Baltimore residents recovering from drug addiction. The Center also offers Recovery Programs that incorporate recovery strategies with gardening, arts, crafts workshops. Last year, they harvested over 200lbs of produce sharing a 1/3 with the community and a 1/3 with local food pantries. Come help plant and prep the garden for another successful harvest.

Interfaith Partners of the Chesapeake
University Baptist Church
501 N Charles St. Baltimore, MD 21218
Time: 3pm-5pm
Contact: Sandy Alexis, [email protected]

Come learn about what the Interfaith Partners of the Chesapeake do and then engage in some hands-on learning. You will have a chance to make a bat house (unfortunately, we only have 12 kits available), plant milkweed and purple coneflower, explore the watershed, learn about the interdependence of animals and plants, discover how long it takes trash to become dirt and find out why pollutants are making there way into our bay.   Besides participants, we are also seeking 9 volunteers to assist our volunteers from the Interfaith Partners of the Chesapeake.  Participants: You can participate in as many or as few of the stations as you like.

CARES Cards Making
University Baptist Church
501 N Charles St. Baltimore, MD 21218?
Time: 3:30pm-5:30pm
You don’t need to be an expert or even all that artsy to help this worthy cause.  A volunteer will be present with all the supplies needed, giving directions, suggestions, and help when needed.  Cards will be sold at our churches the following two weeks for Mother's Day.  All proceeds benefit the CARES Food Pantry.

Teeshirt Grocery Bags
University Baptist Church
501 N Charles St. Baltimore, MD 21218??
Time: 4pm-5pm
Contact: Sandy Alexis, [email protected]

One can never have enough bags, especially those made out of t-shirts. Any tee will work but colors or patterns may look better -- don't worry about underarm stains (we are discarding that part of the shirt). We invite you to bring 2 or more t-shirts (adult size large and bigger work best) to convert into bags. Be ready to donate one of your t-shirt bag creations to the CARES Food Pantry who will use them for their pantry clients.

Making Seed Bombs
University Baptist Church
501 N Charles St. Baltimore, MD 21218
Time: 4:30pm-5:30pm
Contact: Georgia Smith, [email protected]

Seed Bombs are a great way to add some color and attract pollinators to a vacant lot, your backyard, the side of the road or a field. We will be making seed bombs for you to take home and use as your imagination inspires you. Be ready to get your hands dirty as we mix dirt, seeds, and clay to make these little bursts of color. Suitable for mud pie makers of all ages.

Community Dinner
University Baptist Church
3501 N. Charles St. Baltimore, MD 21218

Come enjoy a free community dinner with everyone who participated in one of the projects or if you weren't able to participate then come listen to how the projects went. The meal, prepared by Louise DeLaVergne, will be using produce from the local farmers' markets. A vegetarian option will be provided.
