For the last three summers, the youth of our parish have volunteered their time to provide a Vacation Bible School for the children of the Hispanic Family Center (HFC) in Raleigh. After making deep connections with the children, the teens expressed a strong desire to remain connected with those children and Homework Helpers came from that desire.
The Hispanic Family Center (which is housed in the Catholic Parish Outreach building) aims to improve the lives of low-income Hispanic families in our area. Last year they created an afterschool program aimed at helping struggling elementary children get help with their homework and daily lessons. The families served said they have seen an improvement in their child's school work and have noticed their children were more engaged and excited about their learning.
Many of the children of The Hispanic Family Center come from homes where the parents are living with heavy concerns like poverty and illness. This can hugely impact the amount of time and ability a parent has to help their children struggling in school, a critical piece of the puzzle when it comes to success. In fact, as you may know, education is the surest path out of poverty. So your help in this ministry could have a profound, life-changing affect on these children and our volunteers reaching out to them in solidarity, love and hope.
We would love to be able to continue to provide volunteers to keep this new ministry available to the children of the HFC! Please consider volunteering your time to help this worthy cause. Homework Helpers will be offered on Wednesdays through the school year from 4:20 - 5:30 starting September 26th. Volunteers will come to the HFC, sit down with a group of children and help them with their homework. It's that simple. (Note, the ability to speak Spanish is NOT required.) The HFC will provide a C-Level certified adult volunteer to help facilitate the tutoring sessions. In addition, we would like to have 5 more volunteers to help tutor the children. Teens under 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to comply with diocesan safe environment standards.
Anyone 18 years of age or older must be C-Level certified through the Raleigh Diocese. Follow this link to sign up for this certification: https://www.stfrancisraleigh.org/safe_environment/
