IMPORTANT COVID-19 UPDATE:
We are Essential Services and are excempt form the Governor Newsom's "Stay at Home "order. We will continue to serve our most vulnerable community members with our nightly meal. But based on guidelines surrounding COVID-19, we have altered the service logistics.
We are now serving a full, healthy, packaged takeaway meal rather than our normal seated meal in the dining room, allowing adequate distancing for our volunteers & clients as recommended by the CDC. This takeaway format is also being implemented at our weekend street location.
Volunteers to both prepare & serve this takeaway meal remain the lifeblood of our organization in these challenging times, so our regular volunteer shifts remain open and we appreciate your continued support.
As always, our primary concern is for the health and safety of our community: those we serve, our volunteers and our staff.
We operate our Meal Engagement Program with two daily volunteer shifts including a daytime Meal Prep shift to prepare our daily meal and an evening Meal Service shift to serve the meal to our clients. Our "Pick-Ups Artists" procure the valuable food donations that go provide our meal each day and operate on both a standard & as-needed basis.
Meal Service (5p - 8:30p):
Monday through Friday, we are currently handing out "take away" meals at our kitchen door at The Way In Center on the Salvation Army Hollywood Campus. Your shift will begin here with helping to set up.
Volunteering for our daily meal service M-F will include helping to set up, serving a freshly prepared meal, washing the items we have used to serve the dinner, breaking down and a final cleaning of the kitchen. At the end of the day, cleaning the kitchen is just as important as serving the meal. A thorough cleaning upholds our high hygienic standards and ensures safety for all.
On Saturdays and Sundays, we serve our meal on N. Orange Drive between Santa Monica Blvd. & Romaine Street. Your volunteer shift will begin by meeting our truck at our street location, helping unload/load the truck, setting up our serving tables, serving the meal and sweeping/making sure the street is clean. It is important that we don't leave any trash behind. We require a 3 or 4 of our volunteers to return to our kitchen location to help clean the items we have used to serve.
When we serve and clean, we chat and visit with those who come to us and get to know them little by little through caring and friendly volunteers like you. When they know us, they feel comfortable asking for help moving forward and we do that to the best of our abilities. This is a unique opportunity to serve a beautiful and nutritious meal to our clients and community members.
When you sign up for a day that has open slots, you will receive a confirmation email of your volunteer day and shift. 1 day before you volunteer you wll receive a reminder. Best Practices info will be included in both emails. But don't worry, the Kitchen or Meal Service Lead will give you a small orientation and instructions for your shift. We try to make it really easy to volunteer with us, so we don't have an orientation day like many other organizations.
We look forward to having you join us!
