Good Shepherd Catholic Church

VIC-HOP 2018

Come volunteer and support our homeless brothers and sisters through the difficult winter months at Venture in Community's Hypothermia Outreach Program (VIC-HOP). VIC-HOP is a temporary overnight shelter fully operated and supported by volunteer faith and non-profit organizations December - March and is often the only warm shelter these community members can find.

Good Shepherd supports all Saturday evenings in December and January.

Volunteers are needed to 1) Pickup breakfast bags from Good Shepherd Catholic Church & drop off at Rising Hope (You may also make your own bags at home or add fresh fruit to already assembled bags--just let Susan know).  Bags should be delivered to Rising Hope on Saturday after 6:30pm. 2) Cook dinner for residents each Saturday evening, to be delivered at 6:30pm, 3) Serve dinner to the residents or 4) Chaperone residents overnight: two shifts are available: 6:30pm-midnight & midnight-7:15am. Want to stay the whole night? Simply sign up for both 1st and 2nd shifts.

Must be 18 or over to enter the Shelter.

Chaperones: Volunteers help check guests in, hand out sleeping bags, supervise smoke breaks, monitor the guests throughout the evening, collect sleeping bags in the am, prepare coffee in the morning, hand out breakfast bags, clean up and make sure all guests have left the facility by 7am. We must have at least one male and one female chaperone on site at all times. Please bring a sleeping bag and something to keep you occupied for the evening.

Training: A training lead by County employees will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 9:00 am at Rising Hope United Methodist Church for all overnight volunteers. This training will discuss the layout, rules, and concerns many volunteers enter with inclusive of what to do if any issues arise on the evening of your shift. Should you not be able to make this training, a shorter training will be held on your first evening of volunteering.
