Assistant Ministers

Assisting Minister

Thank you for signing up to serve as an assisting minister.   You are providing an important role in the worship experience of our congregation.  Your responsibilities as an assisting minister include reading the scriptures (with the exception of the Gospel), leading the Prayers of the People, the Offertory Prayer, the Post-communion Prayer, the Sending, assisting with the distribution of the elements for communion, and greeting congregants following worship at the back sanctuary Dublin door.  The bulletin, scripture readings, and the Prayers of the People will be emailed to you on Friday before your scheduled Sunday to lead worship.

On the Sunday you are scheduled to assist, please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of worship.  You will find robes in the hallway closet of the sacristy, along with a cincture (belt), and a cross necklace.  Once you are dressed for worship, please take a moment to review the order of service for the day and direct any questions to Pastor.

After Pastor has asked the congregation to be seated following the Words of Institution, you will come stand in front of the altar to receive communion.  After those assisting have received Holy Communion you will be handed elements for distribution to the congregation.   We will either serve communion at the altar rail or by stations next to the baptismal font.  Pastor will inform you if communion is to be served by stations, otherwise it will be at the altar rail.

In assisting with Holy Communion you will receive either distribute wafers or hold the chalices of wine and grape juice.  If you are in charge of dispensing wafers please say to the communicant, “The body of Christ given for you” or “This is the body of Christ given for you.”  If there are young children bestow a blessing on them such as “Jesus loves you,” “You are God’s beloved child, may God watch over and bless you with his love,” or anything such blessing God places on your heart to share.

If you are in charge of the distribution of wine and grape juice please say to the communicant, ”The blood of Christ shed for you” or “This is the blood of Christ shed for you.”  Make sure you hold both chalices low in front of the communicant so that they can see inside to know which is wine and which is juice.  Please don’t assume that individuals will prefer wine as we have several individuals who prefer grape juice.

Once you have finished communion whether at the altar rail or in line for stations, please check with the pastor or usher to see if anyone needs communion brought to their pew.  Once everyone is communed you may return the remaining elements to the altar and then return to your seat.
