Sidwell Friends School

RSVP and Sign-up for SFS MLK Day of Service and Learning - 2019

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: “What are you doing for others?""  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

All are invited to honor the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. at the fourth annual Sidwell Friends MLK Day of Service and Learning on Monday, January 21st, 2019, 8:30am-12pm in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room on the SFS Upper School Campus.

In the spirit of shared service and learning, we will gather at 9:00 a.m. for a query-based discussion to explore this year’s theme, Racial Disparities in Health Care.  Younger students may join a storyteller in the Chorus Room during the meeting.  The discussion will be followed (at 10:00 a.m.) by service activities that will benefit members of the local community, as well as smaller group discussions during “Coffee and Conversation” with our speakers and community partners.  We will regroup at 11:30 a.m. in the RLS Meeting Room for a short period of reflection before closing with a moment of silence.

Panelists will include:

•    Dr. Eddie Cornwell, A’74, Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Howard University Hospital
•    Dr. Jehan El-Bayoumi, Rodham Institute
•    Dr. Wayne Frederick, P’24, President Howard University
•    Dr.  Michele Klopner, P’22
•    Dr. Michael Lu, P’21 & 24, GW Public Health
•    Whitney Pinger, Nurse Midwife, P’08, 11, & 14, Spouse A’77
•    Stacey Stewart, P’21 & 23, March of Dimes

Sponsored by SFS Parents Association and led by Parents of Black Students committee, in collaboration with Parents of Asian Students, Parents of Latino Students, Arts, Quaker Life, Community Service and Equity, Justice and Community committees.
