About the Play:
A murder mystery set in a clifftop house, the play probes the psychology of jealousy in the shadow of a savage and brutal murder.
Lady Tressilian invites Nevile Strange for his annual visit at Gull's Point. He insists on bringing both his former wife and his present wife, though Lady Tressilian finds this awkward. When a brutal murder occurs, Superintendent Battle and his nephew are called in to investigate.)
Camilla, Lady Tressilian: aristocratic widow in her early 70’s and host of her seaside home. Said of Camilla:
"She has a lot of personality."
"That is quite an understatement."
Mary Aldin: Lady Tressilian's companion, in her mid-30’s. Entirely competent. Something fairly intriguing about her reserve. Said of Mary:
“…never had a life of her own. And now, perhaps, it’s too late.”
Nevile Strange: a handsome athlete and tennis player in his mid to late-30’s. Has been vacationing at Lady Tressilian’s home since he was a boy. Married to Kay after divorcing Audrey. Used to getting his own way.
Kay Strange: Nevile’s beautiful and emotional second wife, 20’s. Impulsive, passionate, insecure, jealous. Athletic.
Audrey Strange: Strange's first wife, 30’s. Something strange about her air of repressed emotion. Aloof, glamorous. So cool and quiet, it is almost impossible to know what she is thinking. (The polar opposite of Kay.) She was orphaned young, raised with her cousins and aunt, the Roydes.
Ted Latimer: a devoted friend of Kay and in love with her. Very good-looking man in his 20’s. Said of Latimer:
“Decorative young man”
Thomas Royde: Good-looking man in a rugged way. 40’s – 50’s. On vacation from his work in Malay states. He is in love with Audrey and like her is a person of few words.
Mathew Treves: retired and distinguished lawyer and an old friend of Lady Tressilian. A man of ripe experience and great shrewdness and a keen observer of human behavior. 70’s.
Superintendent Battle: Police investigator in his 50’s. Thoughtful and methodical. Vacationing with his nephew, he is assigned to the case with him.
Inspector James Leach: Battle's nephew, 30’s – 40’s
