St. Francis of Assisi Room in the Inn Volunteers

Location: Ozanam Center (St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen) at 1306 Monroe

How can I help?

Do you like to cook? Visit with people? Play games? Serve meals? Transport passengers? Donate supplies? There is a job for you ... As a parish, we transform the Ozanam Center (1306 Monroe) into an overnight shelter experiencing homelessness every Thursday evening for 15 people.  All we have to do is open the door and open our hearts every week together! Our season begins on Thursday, November 1 and runs through March 2019. Together we can do so much!

What does it take?

  • 1    volunteer to go to the Carpenter's House (212 North 2nd Street) to assist with hospitality
  • 1    Innkeeper to coordinate the week
  • 1    driver to pick up our guests in the evening and 1 driver to return them in the morning to the Carpenter's House 
  • 4    volunteers to set up the Ozanam Center for the night
  • 10  volunteers to provide dinner and drinks for guests and volunteers
  • 6    volunteers to offer hospitality to our guests during and after dinner
  • 2    overnight shepherds
  • 7    laundry angels
  • 2    volunteers to provide breakfast for each of our guests
  • 5    volunteers to send the guests off and close the Inn in the morning

5:00 PM - 7:30 PM: Welcome our guests as they arrive, serve dinner and provide hospitality during and after the meal.

 

Hygiene Table Monitor

5:30 PM - 7:30 PM: Set up hygiene table, monitor following dinner while guests get what they need, return containers to store room once all guests have visited, leave a list of "needs" in the store room

 

PM Driver

5:00 PM - 6:00 PM: Pick up guests from the Carpenter's House in the RITI Bus. . Pre-approval needed to drive the church bus. Please contact Jim Burge at 901-254-1595 for more info.

You never have to leave home! Contacts the Dinner and Breakfast Crews to manage the delivery of the meals to the Ozanam Center. Arranges for 2 of the Dinner Crew to stay and serve the evening meal, although all are welcome to stay and enjoy our guests!

Overnight Shepherds (2)

7:30 PM - 5:30 AM: OUR MOST IMPORTANT POST OF THIS MINISTRY! Spend the night at the Inn with our guests to ensure their safety and comfort. Complete evening laundry.

 

FRIDAY AM: Breakfast Crew - Breakfast Sandwiches

5:15 AM - 5:45 AM: 16 Breakfast Sandwiches, $20 McDonalds Gift Card or you can prepare breakfast (ie, pancakes, french toast, eggs) on site! Food ready by 5:30am and kitchen left cleaner than it was found! What fun this could be! Any short order cooks?

 

FRIDAY AM: Breakfast Crew - Fruit

5:15 AM - 5:45 AM: 16 pieces of fruit (oranges or bananas). Drop off food on Thursday evening or by 5:30am on Friday.

 

FRIDAY AM: Morning Driver

5:30 AM - 6:45 AM: Pick up guests from the Ozanam Center to return them to the Carpenter's House. Pre-approval needed to drive the church bus. Please contact Jim Burge at 901-254-1595 for more info.

 

FRIDAY AM: Send Off and Clean Up Crew (5)

5:30 AM - 6:30 AM: Serve breakfast and close the Inn. One person from this group will deliver the dirty laundry bags to the SFA Church Office.

 

Laundry Coordinator

Gets the dirty laundry to the SFA Church Office. Then makes sure it is all picked up by the Laundry Angels, washed and returned to SFA no later than Wednesday morning. Ensures it's delivery back to the Inn.
