FUS Grace Episcopal Shelter Meals
Volunteers donate thousands of hours of service each year, and are an important part of fulfilling our mission at First Unitarian Society of Madison. Without volunteers like yourself, FUS simply couldn’t provide the services and programs our community need.
For the breakfast meal, we are looking for 1-2 people to buy food and 3-4 people to prepare and serve at Grace Episcopal Church the third Sunday of each month. It’s the most important meal of the day and we’d like you to help us keep it that way. Breakfast typically will consist of eggs, sausage, cinnamon raisin bread, and prepackaged cereal. The arrival time is the mighty early 4:45 AM.
For the Dinner (evening meal), we are looking for people to buy, prepare and serve at Grace Episcopal the third Saturday of each month. The evening meal typically consists of salad, entree, entree, vegetable, dessert, beverage. Options for food preparation include separately at home, or at Grace Episcopal (they have a stove and microwaves, but no oven) or, with approval, at the FUS kitchen. The arrival time is 7:30 pm, serving from 8 until 9 pm.
For both meals, there is some money set aside at FUS for the food that is purchased. If you do the shopping, you can submit a receipt to Tim Cordon for reimbursement or an in-kind tax deduction letter.
Important Information on Location
The shelter is located at 116 West Washington Avenue in the Grace Episcopal Church. The front of the church is on the Capitol Square and the church takes up most of the 100 block of West Washington. The entry to the shelter is off the alley at the back of the church.
There is parking available for free in the early morning hours on the street just outside the church. There are always open spaces. In the evening, there is limited parking in the alley behind the church.
After you park, walk to the back of the alley. The door for the shelter is on the right. There is a doorbell to the left top of the door if the door is locked. Ring the bell and the night manager will come to let you in promptly. The phone # for the shelter that you may want to program into your phone as a backup is 255-2960.
