FUS Grace Episcopal Shelter Meals

Porchlight/Grace Men's Shelter Meals Team

On the third paired Saturday evening and Sunday morning of each month, volunteers from FUS supply dinner and breakfast for as many as 120 homeless men at the Grace Episcopal Church overnight shelter on the Square in Madison, at 116 West Washington Avenue.

For Saturday evening dinner volunteers are needed to buy, prepare and serve the meal. The meal consists of sloppy joes, salad, vegetable, dessert and a beverage. Volunteers prepare the food at home and deliver it to the shelter, or arrange pick-up with the meal coordinator. The meal coordinator returns crockpots and dishes to the FUS Atrium kitchen the Sunday following the meal. Many people donate the food, although reimbursement is available. Volunteers serving the meal arrive at the shelter at 7:00 pm and are finished by 8:15. (Shelter personnel clean up.)

Sunday breakfast volunteers are needed to purchase the food, and prepare and serve the meal. A shopper buys the food, using a list provided, with an FUS debit card and delivers it to the shelter on Saturday evening after 7:30 pm. Shoppers may also pay for the groceries themselves, as a donation. On Sunday, volunteers prepare and serve breakfast at the shelter and from 4:45 - 7 am. The FUS breakfast menu is scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, non-pork sausage, cinnamon raisin bread, juice, and milk.

Location, Parking, etc The shelter is located at 116 West Washington Avenue in the Grace Episcopal Church basement. Parking and the entry to the shelter are in the alley off the back of the church, entered from West Washington Ave. If you have questions, you can call the shelter at 608/255-2960. Drop off for food is 5:30 to 7 pm.

Recipes Here are our semi-official recipes for sloppy joes and a vegetable. Generally it is good to use these, as they are tried and true, but you're welcome to innovate. For a salad, lettuce is fine, but other salads are preferred. For a dessert, any cookies or bars please; the tastier the better. :)

LETTUCE SALAD (serves 45 - about how many men take a salad; easy but other salads are welcome)  9 - 10 oz packages of salad kits with dressings and fixings included

SLOPPY JOES (serves 30)
3 – Tbsps. vegetable oil
5 – lbs. ground beef
1.5 – cups chopped onion
1.5 – cups chopped celery
1.5 – cups sweet barbecue sauce
2 – 15 oz. cans sloppy joe sauce
Brown ground beef, onion and celery until beef is thoroughly cooked. Drain. Put ground beef mixture into a crockpot, add the barbecue and sloppy joe sauces. Cook until flavors meld.

PRUDY'S CREAMED CORN (Serves 60)
Preparation takes about 10 minutes. 
6 pounds frozen corn kernels
5 – 8 oz. packages cream cheese
5 – Margarine sticks (quarter pound each)
2.5 – Cups of milk
5 – Tbsps. sugar
Salt and Pepper to taste.
Combine all ingredients in two crock pots or one Nesco roaster, and cook on low for 6 hours.

Total cost estimate is $15.00 with ingredients purchased at Woodman’s.
