The Catholic Community of St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis Brown Bag Ministry makes and delivers lunches to a low-income senior citizen apartment community in Durham. It only takes a few hours and is a wonderful opportunity for all ages! Please read the full description before signing up. Everything you need to know can be found at www.stfrancisraleigh.org/bbm.
IMPORTANT: Unlike other area Brown Bag Ministries, St. Francis' program relies on volunteers to provide a portion of the lunch supplies: sandwiches, fruit, and dessert.
Here's how it works:
Each Saturday on the sign up, there are 2 ways to volunteer.
- Group A volunteers make 50 lunches and deliver the lunches for both groups
- Group B volunteers just make lunches and hand off the lunches to Group A for delivery
Both volunteer groups will pick-up supplies (wagon, brown bags, baggies, granola bars, crackers, gloves) from Clare Hall (in the hallway across from the business office) on Thursday or Friday any time between 8:00am and 4:00pm the week of their date of service. Volunteers provide sandwich supplies, fruit snacks, and desserts and make the lunches at home. Volunteers also add a scripture note or kind message in each of the lunches. Decorating the bags is also encouraged.
Group A: Detailed instructions for delivering lunches and for the lunch exchange will be sent out the Wednesday before your date of service.
The Saturday on your date of service at 9:30, you will meet Group B at SFA to take their assembled lunches and the ones you made and drive them to Morehead Hills in Durham.
500 Cobb Street, Durham, 27701
You will go into the apartment building, assemble with your fellow volunteers in the lobby, and divide up to knock on apartment doors, announce you have a lunch, and leave it at the doorstep. Then move to the next apartment unit, knocking, announcing, and dropping off the lunch. It will take about an hour.
Saturday on your date of service, 9:30am, bring your assembled lunches to the SFA campus near Clare Hall.
Since this is such a popular ministry, and we have a backlog of people who would like to volunteer, but haven't been able to yet, we ask that you limit your volunteer slots to a maximum of 2x. How blessed we are to have such willing and kind volunteers!
Masks are required for our volunteers regardless of vaccination status. Most of the residents at Morehead Hills have been vaccinated.
We hope to get back to assembling lunches together at SFA during the later part of this year. Stay tuned!
